Live Rock in Canada

I was emailing back and forth with Derek last year; he stopped responding when I asked for a picture. If I'm ordering hundreds of dollars worth of a perishable good I expect better service than that.

Cool if you haven't gotten the live rock I can see if I can ship internationally for you. Shipping might be high thou I'm located in Los Angeles,CA

Did you have much life live form the seeded rock? I'm definitely interested in trying it but if I lose everything but the bacteria it would be all for naught.
I think the water got a little warmer in Hali, although maybe like just a few degrees. I remember some of the rock had beautiful barnacles but they won't last in a tropical tank. They need colder water. There were some amazing starfish and anemones. The rock I collected was more like solid than porous but had a lot of macroalgae with holdfasts on the rock as well as carpet algae covering the rock. So you should get some good beneficial bacteria even though the rock is not porous. You have the sand though. You could always seed with that.

There are also many kinds of inverts there that you could potentially acclimate.

I don't have a dry suit but I do have a 3 mil wetsuit ;)
Hahaha awesome. "Eyes the byes" :D

From my experience it's quite a but warmer :P But, lots of critters survive here in tide pools that can hit 25-30 degrees in summer, at least for short periods... maybe it's worth a try?

We actually get some nice, porous rock here once you get away from shore; could make an interesting addition!

If you get a chance, try it. Would love to see some pics, if possible.

I know this thread's pretty old, but i'm in the exact same situation as OP, i would love to start my tank with live rocks...but it's nearly impossible to find some, i'm in touch with Derek who sells Pukani WS Live Rock, anyone with feedback about those ?

I have been looking to it’s really hard to find I was going to try the real reef rock from j&l it says live rock but who knows

@Kfactor from what i could read from various threads on various forums, J&L ones are okay...you"ve got good bacterias and coraline, but that's about it, no real "life" in those rocks as they are aquacultured in closed system, not in sea...

You can get live rock from Aquarium Illusions in Edmonton. It's pretty reasonable at $8.95/lb, and they ship. It's where I got most of my live rock last year. I also picked up a big chunk at their store when I made the drive into the city. They've got all of their LR sitting in part of a big tank. It did come with some algae (proably ulva) and bristleworms but, thankfully, no parasites. I also found an empty crab shell in my Evo last month, and I certainly didn't buy any crabs for that build, so it must've hitchhiked on.

Marine Experience, also in Edmonton, also has LR at $10/lb, and they also ship (at least in-province). I picked up several nice pieces from them in January.

@davidcalgary29 thanks for the infos, for how long do you have the Aquarium Illusions's in your tank ?
Are you pleased with the variety of life that has popped from the rocks ?
Did you cure them ?
thx
I've had them in for over three months at this point. I didn't cure them and was prepared to accept the risk of bringing in uninvited guests into my builds (I didn't put in fish for over a month after I put in the LR).

There have been some unexpected bonuses: a cerith snail hitchhiker on a Marine Experience rock; a feather duster (which quickly died) on one from Aquarium Illusions. I put a big rock from Aquarium Illusions into my Evo, which allowed me to cycle it in nine days. It took over a month, on the other hand, to cycle my IM40 with a mixture of LR and dry rock from Amazon.

I do have aiptasia in my IM40, but I am pretty certain that they arrived on colonies of coral that I bought on kijiji. I also have aiptasia (and, formerly, majano) in my RSM 250, but that definitely came on the LR that came with the system, as I saw loads of it in the seller's new tank. I just kill the polyps as they pop up now. I don't blame the stores for my aiptasia infestation.

I wasn't really impressed with Aquarium Illusions' tanks when I visited in January. They're dirty, poorly lighted, and one had a dead fish in it. And there's no other way to put this: some of the employees were also pretty rude. But they ship, and people can have bad days, and they have a great selection of food. YMMV.

Got 30lbs of live rocks coming in today from Aquarium Illusions, not impressed with the packaging but rocks looks okay, got a nice low tide smell when i opened the box, no foul of rotten smell so sounds good to me.
took the rocks to a bucket with heater and powerhead while waiting for the tank to be delivered in about 2 or 3 weeks.
