Im redoing my sump and it currently had lr where the water comes in. I think it was more of a trap for junk than it helped. The sump is not very accessiable and can't be cleaned out good often. I'm thinking of just putting the lr back in the dt and just leaving my micro alage in the intake compartment to the sump and using my middle section as a place to keep new and baby corals. third compartment holds skimmer and return pump. Any thoughts?

I would flip that around a little.
First part do the skimmer middle coral and the last part to algae in the last part

yes, you always want the bigger particles filtered out before letting them go too far down the line in your sump. so i would say filter socks (if any) and/or skimmer then corals in 2nd compartment and then pods and other critters can find refuge (hence refugium) in 3rd compartment before going into return.
