Want to re-do my aquascaping. Tank is about 6 or 7 months old.How long can live rock be out of water before losing beneficial bacteria? Thanks to any feedback.

I don't know how long the bacteria can survive out of water, but I've never had a problem pulling my rock out for a few hours to move things around.

Since liverock is generally shipped wrapped in wet newspaper, I would say that you are good to go for 24 to 48 hours (if not longer), provided that you keep it moist. Once the rock dries out, you're in trouble. I've also left rock sit out of the tank for several hours without any issues.

what if i am going to be drilling and possibly cutting or chipping parts of the rock, will i have any issues with ammonia or any other un for scene issues?

Cover it up with a saltwater soaked towel or newspapers and it will stay good for a long time.

the only problme i have had with pulling rock form the water for longer periods of time is corraline turing white in some areas. matter a fact it that seems to happen really quickly sometimes. the good thing is it always comes back very quickly as well

thanks for the backup all. i can't wait to redo my acuascaping. doing this for looks and sake of getting better flow and more caves for the fish. also need some better shelving for coral.
