Live rock rubble in overflows

I have only had my tank up for about a year. I wanted to keep some mandarins but was worried that my 10 gallon refuge would not produce enough pods. I noticed my overflow boxes in each corner appeared to be wasted space. So I filled both overflow boxes about half way with live rock rubble. It appears to be working like two small refuges. I see pods and other things growing in them. Is there any hazard leaving them like this.

My concern would be detritus build up.. and that would be one heck of a hard area to clean.
