Hello, I recently filled up a 65 gallon tank with RODI water and my TDS was measuring 0ppm, I then added sand and dry rock that had been washed in regular tap water and dried. I expected the tds to rise some but it’s up to 225ppm! That’s higher than my tap water even is. Did the rock or sand cause the tds to increase? Thanks!

Did you also add salt mix or just rock and sand?

Just the rock and sand, I know the salt will increase the tds so I was checking before hand.
If the tank isnt even started up and cycled yet I wouldnt worry to much about tds. But rinsing your sand and rock in tap water is your culprit. Rinsing with ro/di water would have been best, but if the tank isnt even cycled yet I wouldn't be too concerned as theres no fish and coral for it to upset. Once you finish cycling you'll do water changes which will pull out that TDS :)

Ok thanks! I just thought it was weird the tds is higher then my straight tap so something increased it, must have been residual stuff on sand or rock.

TDS stands for total dissolved solids.
If the solids are something you don't want it is bad.
If the solids are something you do want it isn't.
The number itself doesn't mean anything.
