Live rock that's in the sand is black

Why does my liverock that sits in the sand turn black is it normal?

then its probably nothing. An algae smell is fine, the concern is rotten eggs.

scrub brush(pot scrubber) and a rinse. if your rescaping and trying to pretty it up you can add some peroxide to your scrub water. just rinse well.

doesnjt look like live rock , more like ocean rock. live rock is ultra lightweight and socks up water when put in the tank as it is very porous.
I think what you have there is a lump of limestone

I've never had any live rock turn black that was in contact with the sand bed or under it.
Most all of it will be fresh white in color from the sand keeping light loving algae off the surface.

A couple things come to my mind would be a heavy build up of organics in your sand bed among other unwanted things
Or bacteria of some kind dominating the area of low oxygen within your sand bed.

More likely it is dead matter. but, since it doesn't smell terrible, it probably isn't much that died. Probably just the film of whatever lived on the surface.
