I recently purchased a 65 gallon hexagon aquarium with sump, stand, approximately 50 ponds of live rock and pump for $50.00. I am completely new to this and currently overwhelmed with all the info.

Is there a way to re-use this rock? My local shop in Tallahassee, FL recommended soaking in plain tap water, changing the water every day to once every two days to flush out all the nasties. And to do this for approximately 2 weeks.

Also, I have seen plenty of stuff online about "jump-starting" the aquarium with different solutions, What say you about this shortcut? My gut says no, but am open to guidance (Use the Fish Luke).

Their method is set to do three things: remove pests, remove organic matter and remove nutrients that have built up over the years. It should work too. At the end, you can rinse the rock in RODI water to remove nasty tap water contaminants if there are any. Then put your rock in your tank and proceed with cycling like you were using dry rock.

Fist off, that was a pretty sweet deal! And I do agree with what pat said about the rock. As far as the "Jump starting" goes I would just let nature take its course through the nitrogen cycle. Personally it is too risky to interfere with something that can wipe out tanks.

Jump starting can work, but I personally wouldn't do it. Not so much because I'd be worried about it, but letting it develop naturally helps you develop the right mindset of patience when it comes to dealing with your tank. There's a saying that you'll come to see the wisdom of soon enough: "In reef aquariums, only disasters happen quickly."

Take your time, do things right, and make sure that you have a plan - and that you stick to your plan - as you develop your tank.
