i am in a dilemma on whether to buy live or dry rock. i like the the way cheaper cost of the dry but if it is more of a hassle then i will just purchase the live. Just want the pros opinions on the stuff. lol

If I had to do over again I would buy half and half. I did strictly dry rock this time, and while I have no pests like anemones or anything like that, I also do not have other beneificial life forms either. In this case the good far outweights the bad, IMHO.

Agreed. 50/50 is nice, just make sure it's the same type. Too many times I've seen a mix and it doesn't flow too well IMO.

I started with 100% dry Pukani and then seeded with a really small piece of LR out of a super nice tank and a cup of their sand. If I were to start from scratch again I would go the same route.

I have 100% dry pukani as well. It's a lot easier to add the stuff you want then to get rid of the stuff you don't. Completely new tank with dry rock took me 6 weeks to cycle.

dry rock and if you want to cheap out like my buddy and dont buy any live rock at all what i did was is gave him a bunch of copepods and amphipods out of the canister filter and shaved a bunch of my coraline algae till my water was purple in the little bowl and gave that to him and his tank took off, 3 weeks and there was coraline algae growing every where

i agree with what everybody said from the above post. You can also a buy purple rock one that's real purple'd up all around the rock in your LFS and scrape it off then put it in your tank and see those small and tiny pieces of purple sticking to the live and dead rocks.

Steps

1. Size rock (small or medium) as long it really purple'd up
2. a small plastic container
3. get water from your DT
4. fill the the plastic container with your water
once you have steps 1-4 done
5. start scraping the purple rocks with a blade "PLEASE BE CAREFUL DO NOT TO CUT YOUR FINGERS"
6. mix the water with the all the scraping you did the rock onto the container
7. then drop the water that was in the container into the tank slowly not all at once

Remember all this steps i just told you do not to them inside the tank. Everything as to be done in a separate plastic container.

i hope all this steps work fine for you happy reefing =)
