Live rock VS?

You might consider mixing dry rock and cured rock together to get the system started. It will be cheaper to setup, but you won't be starting completely fresh.

Getting ready to purchase rock soon so I'm here to tag along. Still undecided but I'm leaning towards dry rock.

i just had that problem, i ended up with going LR. I like the chance of the wildness about it. its like you sneak downstairs at night with a red light to see what else is there. its a "is it good.....or.......bad " game

But I was given another hundred gallon tank earlier today so I think I'll be setting up that one the same time I'm setting up the 75 so yeah I'm going to have live everywhere let's just leave it at that. Lol
The recommended amount per gallon is quite a bit. I ended up going with a 65 gallon package for my 110gal display, so 130 lb LR. I bought an additional 40lb LS so I have 105lb LS, 130lb LR. It turned out to be a perfect amount for the look I was trying to accomplish.

Yeah I have over 300 pounds of rock live rock ordered now

I strongly suggest reef cleaners rock!
Beginning research tonight and at first glance looks promising and affordable (rare to this hobby). I have read many horror stories about unwanted pests so I'm hesitant on live rock.

I was looking into pukani as my rock for the large surface area and reef cleaners claims a large surface area too.

But I still have time to research and change my mind for the twenty seventh time.

That's what I did for lights, changed my mind a lot. Was set on t5 for sure! Then found a deal on some kessils and couldn't pass them up

I had a really hard time deciding to go dry rock or live rock that I'm too much of an adventurous and decide if I'm going to go and I'm going to go big I'm a little nervous because I'm not sure how to identify what is good and what is bad but thankfully for this site they love to identify things so it should be a fairly good endeavor good luck on what you choose and you gotta let us know

I didn't go through all the posts. Just wanted to say that my first tank was started with live rock. I think it's good to do so just because of the interesting things that come out of the rock. Get to learn about all the hitchhikers. Sometimes you get some pretty cool things, to boot. My new tank was started with man made dry rock. I like it too because I get to seed the hitchhikers I want and not deal with the ones I don't want.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of live rock. The only advantage I see is that you would have colored-up rock instantly. I also prefer the luxury of being able to layout and glue the rocks on my timeframe. For that reason, I use Marco Rocks. It's an amazing product at a great price. Just do your cycle and you are good to go. On top of that, I don't even do traditional cycles. I use Dr. Tim's One and Only and cycle it in less than a week. I literally have some fish and corals in my tanks within a week of setup! The Marco Rocks will arrive VERY clean... basically bleached white. But they color up really quick. I have had the Marco Rocks in mine for only 9 months and they have colored up amazing!

Here's a pic just days after I put the Marco Rocks in:

And here it is 9 months later... I obviously changed the rock scape a bit. But as you can tell, not using live rock, not using live sand and not doing a traditional 1-2 month cycle has not prevented the tank from doing very well. I have zero algae and everything is doing wonderful.

Beautiful tank! I'm a newby here and was wondering what kind of sand did you use?

So what kind of sand did you use? Beautiful tank!

I'm not sure if you are talking to me, but I used Tropic Eden sand. They have several different sizes... all of them dust free and doesn't even need rinsing. Just get the non live sand.

Thanks! And yes I was talking to you. :) I'm new to forums and am having a hard time figuring out how to navigate. Lol.
