Live rock with a small crab hiding

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. Going to setup a nano tank. Bought live rock today. It has a red crab hiding inside. I dont know what to do, heard lots of stories. Is it bad or what? I have attached a pic, doesnt show much just the tip of his leg. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

This worked for me...hold the rock over saltwater. Just above it. He might go for a swim.

Out of curiosity, what's the black stuff "veined" throughout the outside of the rock?

I had similar looking material on a piece of rock. Is it almost tarry to the touch? Mine was a form of black algae that grew under low or very low light. If it gets a foothold in your tank, it is almost impossible to get rid of it. Mine spread and I finally had to remove the rock and SCRUB any small patches that had spread to other rocks. I would ask the seller what it is and return it if he does not have a valid answer. You may end up fighting this stuff for years. I found several other reefers with similar results. I would NOT put it in my tank ever again.

I would not take any chances, when in doubt, throw it out.

If you put your ear up next to it, does it make any odd sounds, maybe a bit like Tim Curry?

I'd try to find out what it is from where you go it, at the least.
