I have some live rock that has been out of water couple of weeks. What do I need to do to get it going again? It is not going straight to my DT yet. Kinda need to know ASAP.

Thanks

Well I pretty sure you should put it into some buckets of reef parameter quality saltwater and put a maxi jet or power head in the buckets with the live rock and let though babies run for a while till you good and ready to use the live rock. I think this is the way to a least keep the live culture viable on the live rock, just like anything in the reef, the bio life on the rock needs good saltwater and some flow to survive while not in a system. As far as a time line for how long I'm not sure ... I hope this helps

But defiantly get them into some bucket with saltwater and some flow for now until you have a definitive answer. And do a water change on the buckets when the water gets dirty and cloudy this will at least save what's still live on the rock and remove some of the detris.

Thanks Steviereefs !

I put them in a large brute container for now. I have a heater and small filter for it as well. I was going to put a pump on the opposite side to move the water a little. Just wanted to know if I was on the right track.

What about water? With salt on the rocks how much salt water should I start with?

What do you mean with the salt on the rocks?
What brand salt do you have?
If you have a good marine salt you should be adding about 1/2 a cup per gallon of water.
You have to mix the salt water first before you put in any rock. The salt in the water should mix with a maxi jet for about a day first.

It looks like there is salt in the rocks that has dried.
I have Instant Ocean Sea Salt.
Thanks

Do you have RO/DI water? If not the a Local fish store should have some.

more info
This looks like a good place near you for marine hobby goods.
Get to know them, just make sure any info you get from them is correct. Always double check any info you get about the marine hobby many time you can get misleading information most notably form local fish stores. I'm not saying don't trust them just double check info on the internet and here on reef2reef.

All I have right now is tap, I have some dechlorinator to put in it. Cant make it to AC till next week. This will be just temp. for now, I am in the process of moving and need to get by for couple weeks.

I have ro/di setup at the new place for the DT.

Liverock needs to be maintained in water with the appropriate salinty to keep the beneficial stuff alive. Even if it doesn't dry out if the salinity gets too low or more likely gets to high from evaporation most or all of the beneficial organisms will die. Once this has happened it can be recultured with bacteria with bacteria from another tank or starter culture and even left alone these ubiquitous bacteria will colonize sterile rock in brand new saltwater. However many of the other beneficial organisms can only be populated in your DT by being reintroduced on new live rock. Of course be sure to "cure" or quarantine the new live rock like anything else.

Thanks,

I have it all set up in a brute can for now with a filter, small rec pump, and heater. Checked all of the levels and all looked good. I might get a live rock to put with it next week.

Thanks all who helped.
