Live rock

Is there a good way to cut live rock and how long can I leave it out hitting the air?

I took some out laid it on an old towel on concrete and hit it with a hammer and bolster chisel it soon broke up to how I wanted it and I gave it a rinse of in old tank water to remove any little bits and back in the tank was out about 5 mins with no apparent issues

I would say maybe 12 hours in the air but after that you will start having a lot of die off on the rock.
