Is 12 bucks a pound for live rock normal? No way on gods green earth imma spend 90 bucks on 7 pounds of rock.

WOW that really pricey. You can still find it for $7-$8 a lb. I believe that you can still get rock from Florida and there is always the base that you can get much cheaper and cure yourself.

I'm doing all dry rock on my next build (many reasons for this, with cost being one, although far from the most important reason for me). Some people do a mix of mostly dry with a little seed live rock. Others have some dry base rock and all the visible rock being live. Just different options to save some money.

As for live rock, there are different types. There is the random type just sitting in a bucket in the LFS with bacteria on it but not much else visible. There at least was (not sure if it is still available from anywhere) what is called boat rock since it was shipped from overseas on a boat and had a lot of die off but still a lot alive and was a cheaper live rock option. Then there are things like the Florida live rock that can be shipped in bags of water. Those are full of life and obviously cost a lot more. The vast majority you will find in a LFS should be on the cheaper end of $7-8 as LiveWire said.

I guess it depends on where you live? Here in Pennsylvania.. I've gone to stores that have great live rock as low as $3.99 per lb and some as high as $6.50 per lb (the hidden reef and the Fish Factory).

I'm looking at a 60-70lb single rock right now, that is $3.99/lb DRY...... it's a bitter pill to swallow. $13 is way more than I'd ever pay though.... don't care if it's neon purple....... I have paid $7/lb for completely purple coraline rocks.

I decided to visit a lfs about an hour away and I can say ill never been seen in that place again. Nice place, good looking fish, chill employees but everything is wayyyy overpriced. Shoutout to my main lfs WardsAquatics for being awesome.

If you dont want to pay big prices look for local reefers selling it off.
If you want good prices on dry rock. Buy it by the ton from Marco Rocks
