Hey everyone! So I have some what of a dumb question. So here it is how much live rock is too much?

Here is why I ask my protein skimmer sucks. T

he build of my tank I am having a hard time finding one that fits. So my thought is add more rubble rock to assist with filtration.

My opinion is the more than Marier that is if you like the look! But I would pack that with rubble rock if you have the room.

hi ,live rock and skimmer are key to success, think i see plenty of coralline on weir teeth ,how big is your tank?

I can’t believe I’ve never had a skimmer! Maybe my next build.

@Blknovass checked out your build is that a cpr skimmer? we can talk here or on your build :)

poss look into nano tunze/octopus/eshopps/they may be rated for smaller but will just work harder, cpr are not high on my list either

You can basically add as much as you want imo if you want a very sparse build you may need to add some other surface for bacteria to live on/in. In your case with more add as much as you want (or can add) but keep in mind a skimmer and live rock have different functions and one doesn't really replace the other.

I was looking at a ghost skimmer. Yea after having this CPR I would not recommend it the pump it comes with is just no good too weak I have to run higher water level in my overflow just to get some operation out of it.

I was looking at possibly adding one or two bio bricks to the overflow/sump. What different filtration is the skimmer doing as compared to live rock? How do people get away with not running a skimmer?

some do,3 decades here ,rock n skimmer ,rock works as a filter ,skimmer removes the nasties

In a very basic explanation skimmers remove things like nitrates and phosphate live rock is a place for bacteria to live to facilitate the nitrogen cycle. You can run without a skimmer just need a different way to remove nutrients or run a nutrient rich system.

Ok maybe I will see about a new skimmer then.
