I have a 75 gallon tank with around 52 pounds of live rock in it. I am pretty sure that if you want tangs, you need at least 7 hiding spots. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction of how many pounds I should have in my tank. I have heard pound/gallon, 1.25-1.5 times gallons for pounds. Hopefully someone a bit more informed and smarter could tell me a solid number. Thanks.

The rule of thumb for how much live rock per gallon to use is now less and less applied. when live rock is the sole source of surface area for nitrifying bacteria I’ve commonly heard 1.5pounds of porous rock per gallon of Display Tank water. But with options like marine pure or siporax we can effectively add more surface area then Live Rock(LR)
For example I have 60g total volume system with 35 pounds of Pukani LR and one 8x8x1 block of marine pure in my sump and that’s more then enough for my needs.

For your situation (tangs) I would be more focused on how many caves you can build with the room and budget available and still add extra surface area like marine pure or siporax to your sump

Thanks for the help! I have 1 goldrim tang right now and 4 damsels... space and hiding spots are limited, so I need to build up. My tang looks a little anxious in his small pace, so I need more spaces. Thanks again for the help. @NowGlazeIT

I think it also depends on what kind of rock and how dense or porous it is. Fiji needs more than marco/reef saver, and a lot more than pukani. With the stuff on the market like NowGlazeIT said. I don't think it matters as much. I prefer more flow than overloading the weight. Cleaner rocks filter better

Tangs definitely like their hiding places, specifically at night when they "sleep." I have a blue hippo and purple tang and they never swim at night, they always dart right for their hiding spot when the lights turn off.

I did .75lbs per gallon in my current tanks, but I also have 3 marine pure blocks in my sump.

Another thing to keep in mind is that 75g is not a ton of room for a tang or multiple tangs. Hiding spots will be key to minimize stress to the fish.

I'm in the process of upgrading from a 55g to a 110g and even that will be small in a few years, but I didn't want to get rid of my tangs quite yet.

Very well put! 1 of many reasons that owning tangs is way more expensive then just having a bigger glass box

As long as you leave room to clean the glass and sand if you have it you should be good
