What is your take on all these live sales? Do you think these vendors are offering good deals or not?

Compared to the old days? No way. The stuff today costs way to much.

I agree with that them good ole days are gone.

I think most of the time all these pieces are just wayyyyy over priced then arent sold so the vendors do a live sale and say how much the prices are marked down like "insano chalice was 600 per eye, now 300!!! What a deal!!" I don't think all vendors do this, I have a few I really like but there are just some where I'm like comeon, unless this makes gold for me its not worth that kind of money

I've been out of the hobby for about 7-8 years now & I can't believe some of the prices. I'm new to all this live sale stuff, but $50 plus dollars a polyp for zoanthids seems crazy to me. I remember paying $50 for a piece of rock covered with zoathids. Then again, look at the gas prices at the pump, not the same as years ago

Right on, but we aren't pumping oil out of the ground here. Still the same ol frags that used to be out there, if not, many more reefs out there fragging, they should have come down.

You can still get these rocks most places - they're just wild collected colonies as opposed to proven aquacultured coral that holds it's color.

That's the main thing you (should) pay for when it comes to frags: Proven growers that withstand captivity and hold their color (or increase over time). You get what you pay for IMO/IME... you can still find old school corals at old school prices.

Not. There is the occasional great deal but you have to get lucky. I think it is a bigger draw for newer reefers who just don't know. I've watched the last few and noticed that there are tons of new guys clambering for stuff. Just my opinion

Couldn't agree more. Its really entertaining to say the least. They all get hyper and want everything they see then realize they have to sell it because they have bills to pay

I agree with the neophytes theory. They buy into the hype, and are clamoring to get the newest and rarest pieces before the next guy pulls the trigger. I get a good laugh out of watching them do so. Some of the reactions are hilarious when they get sniped. The prices, at least in my opinion, are not nearly good enough to justify staying up for 24+ hours. Then again, prices in general are way too high at most vendors.

I'm a newer reefer (under a year) and I honestly don't mind paying a little extra for a nice aquacultured piece. That is the way this business is going. Proven color and survivability (not a word I know). I've watched a couple live sales but haven't purchased anything from them yet. I've bought most of my frags right here from fellow reefers and a lot of their good stuff is going for over $50 a frag, many much more. Do you think I am getting taken advantage of? I've done many many hours of research and think buying the frags and watching them grow is worth it. If you are finding these frags for less money, let me know because I sure haven't. You guys must have many secrets we "neophytes" don't know about.

I will say the chalice craze is something I haven't gotten into. I'm speaking Acros.

Most of the insane price gouging is with chalices so you are lucky for not being in the chalice craze. Im sure pectinia will be next. All I can say is visit some of these vendors sites and look for yourself since I sont want to name names but you will see chalices that go for 600 or 700 per 1/2 " frag and when the live sales come around the pieces are insanely discoutned "was 800, now 400!!!" From what I can tell 50 for an acro frag isnt bad but all depends on what kind of acro it is. Most expensive ive seen are the different dragons which can go for 150 for a 1/2 - 1 " frag

Its just an entertaining to dump money into our tanks...there are good deals to be had but at the end of the day who cares as long as you love the piece and have funny...in the end its just money...there are worse things I could be doing with my cash than paying for nice coral....

Exactly, why are people so quick to judge vendors? Does anyone know all the cost that comes with being a vendor in retail?? Electricity, business license, resale license, rent, equipment oh and the coral isn't free either.

it seems to me that these vendors have placed their desire for financial stability in front of my need for cheap but brilliant coral. they need to get their priorities straight!! This desire they have to "make a living" really harshes my mellow. These vendors and their complete lack of support for my desires and financial situation is just bad business.

Lol, you said it.
But seriously, vendors charge what the market will bear, just like any other retail market. A live sale is just like a storefront sale but online. It's to clear out inventory. Sometimes they have great deals or incentives, sometimes not. IMHO

I might not know the exact cost but i can safely say my LFS pays all that you listed and yet their corals are priced wayyy less then some well known vendors here.Take those paly combo rock for example.I see them being frag up and sold for $35-$50 a frag.I can get the whole rock Between $60-$80.If it's the really nice one then $90.The combo rock that you see on my avatar,I paid $65 for it.If my lfs can sell it at those price then i am pretty sure most vendors here can too.If you need picture of those paly combo rocks then let me know.more power to these vendors if they can command those prices.I like to spend my money more wisely cause in the end,i did earn it
