so i decided to go with a 55 gallon tank. could the majority of my sand be unlive sand and the rest live? like 50 or 75 % unlive sand ? or would it be smarter to go with all live sand

don't bother with live sand. Do all "unlive". It wil be alive soon enough.

+1 live sand is sort of a gimmick, maybe toss a sandwich bag or two of sand from a friends aquarium to speed up the process.

it really depends on what you want. I would go to liveaquaria.com and research. Check out what you want then make a list.

Marine Aquarium Substrate: Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand

2 bags of this will be more than enough for a 55gal. its great sand not to heavy not to lite. rinse it if you want. either way your oging ot get dust. dump it in run just filter pads to take the dust out. will clear up pretty quick.

after you get sand and rock in and start your cycle, if you have a friend or a local club member with a mature tank, ask if you can get a cup or 2 of there sand and put in your tank to help boost the bacteria.
