I plan on starting my first saltwater tank soon. I have a 60g (32Lx23Wx17X) with a 20g sump. I would like a pair of clown fish, but other than that I'm up for anything. What are some suggestions for fish and coral for a beginner?

Thanks!

Great fish for that size tank.... gobies and blennies, Firefish, wrasses, dwarf angels (it’s hit or miss with them... they might nip at your corals), a bristletooth tang of some sort (tomini or white tail), pyramid butterfly fish (they are plantivores, not corralavores), some dottybacks (watch the aggression), cardinals..... the list is huge.

As for corals... most any soft corals, euphyllia species, mushrooms and zoanthids are all good first corals.

Good luck!

Live Aquaria classifies fish. I suggest that you look for fish that are “easy”, “peaceful” and “reef safe”.

Nice fish to have: nearly any goby will work. Blennies are classed as reef safe but many will go after SPS corals. No SPS and they should be fine. Fire fish are good. Bengai cardinals are good. One Chromis should work. Some of the small fairy and flasher wrasses are good. Royal gamma are good. Dotty backs are great fish but tend to be aggressive.

I have a Clown, an Orchid Dottyback, and a Tailspot Blenny. We used to have a Blue Reef Chromis that was absolutely gorgeous and got along with everyone.
