Unique Corals is one of the most progressive marine aquarium livestock companies in the country today, and we are looking for some young people to come spend time with us this summer. We do it all at Unique Corals, from importing to retailing, intensive coral culturing to wholesaling to other stores, as well as going to the natural habitats to source out the best corals in the world, and learning from the natural habitats where they are found.
Such a massive undertaking involves having a great handle of so many disciplines, from basic coral aquarium husbandry and associated chemistry, to advanced disease and pest control, recognition and treatment, as well as being able to identify the veritable living-catalogue of corals that we work with on a daily basis. All of these areas of expertise involve putting in a lot of time and effort into mastering the basics, as well as pushing the envelope of what we currently know.
With these concepts in mind, we are looking for a few passionate young people who are driven to learn more about coral reefs, about corals and aquariums, and especially how it all comes together in a captive environment. Qualified candidates should be between the ages of 14 to 25, able to spend at least two days a week at our facility in Van Nuys, CA beginning June 8th, to August 31st 2015, have their own transportation, and most of all have a desire to really learn more.
The internship positions will be unpaid. Selected interns will not be asked to trudge away at menial work but instead will be stimulated with a wide range of duties that cultivate skills in life, and in aquarium husbandry. Tasks may include analyzing water chemistry and equipment performance, servicing crucial aquarium components, aquarium photography, and especially advanced coral propagation techniques with a wide range of coral species.
Internship positions will be assigned based not only on your current level of aquarium experience, but also on a real desire to learn and spend time with corals, and your capacity to be an important member of the Unique Corals team during your time with us.
