Just set up my tank 2 weeks ago and trying to figure out what fish to get.

What is your overall goal for the tank? What type of corals would you like, any type of fish that you must have? Answering these will help us give some compatible recommendations.

It is good to have a clear vision from the start. I did not on my first tank, and I regretted some early decisions.

You probably will too at some point, but the best thing you can do is limit your regrets with smart purchases early on.

Good to know. You will probably want smaller and less aggressive clowns. I personally avoided maroon clowns in a similar tank.

Depending on if you plan on adding a sand bed or not, sand sifting gobies are nice for keeping everything clean. Avoid a golden head goby, though, they are great but get a bite of sand and sift high in the tank, so sand rains down on everything.

I am sure at some point you will want an anemone. I would recommend leaving lots of space for the anemone to settle where it wants, then add your final corals after it is happy. I made the mistake of adding a nem last and trying to force it to be happy in a spot, did not work out well.

LPS take up alot of space, you will want to give them a good radius to grow into, especially when buying small.

I personally love the symbiotic relationship that many fish have with shrimp. There are some awesome shrimp/goby pairs as well as cleaner shrimp that will interact with anything.

You could probably get a smaller wrasse in there, that is a super popular choice. I would recommend a fairy wrasse over the more popular six line.

Finally, avoid a lawn mower blenny unless you absolutely have to have one for algae control. They get bigger than expected and can be bullies.

Have the IM 40 AIO myself and currently have 1 clown and 1 chromis. Planning to add royal gramma, yellow coris wrasse, and banggai cardinal and possibly a blenny

pink streak or possum wrasse for bug control
tail spot blenny for algae control
bonded pair of yasha gobies with pistol shrimp

I have a bonded pair of yellow watchmen gobies in my 40B and its so much fun watching them take turns guarding the tiger pistol shrimp

I agree that yellow watchmen gobies are an excellent choice for that size of tank. I was thinking about getting them for my 32.5 gal tank along with possibly a coral beauty angelfish. I’ve seen some sites say they might bother soft corals, but others say they are completely reef compatible. Not 100% sure about them, but I love how they look and the fact that they do not need a large tank. I find it harder to find unique looking fish for smaller tanks.
