Loc line size

hey guys, I have a 50gallon scstarphire tank.

I was at a reed convention recently and bought a variable flow for my 1/2inch returns by vivid.

They were just too big, so I thought it might be my loc lines (which it was, they were ever so slightly less then 1/2”) so I bought a new set.
Now the new set of loc line balls and new adapter are ever so slightly bigger in thread then the actual return.

Where do I go now? Can I spend more and get an adapter? Maybe it’s metric?

Normally if u run then through hot water they expand a bit and go right on I don’t know if u have tried that

Seems like a good idea however the female connection on the tank is the part that is slightly smaller
