I say get the new tank started as soon as you get it. move the LR and half the water. I would siphon the water before stirring up anything. move the LR and everything else. just anticipate a mini cycle. should be good after a month or two. good luck man. it'll be some work but the extra depth and security will help in the long run. excited for yah Chase.

We do. I'd bet Brandon will let you use them if we do not have tanks coming in. I think we have another big one coming in either today or next Tuesday.

Ouch! Good Luck Loki. I downsized from a 350 to a 165 a little over a year ago. Just as Marvin said, I moved pretty much everything over from the old tank starting with as much of the "old" water as I could. When I had half of the water in the new tank, then 2 of us started building the reef.
It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. A little difficulty in stirring up things trying to see to build the new reef. I had to wait inbetween layers to let it settle. I did filter the water but I did not want to take to much stuff out.

I actually think if your rock remains wet and submerged that you will not likely experience a mini cycle that would impact your system too much. One suggestion I have is if you have a lot of critters in the sand be mindful of their survival as there can be a LOT of life in the sand bed (i find that people tend to forget this when moving their sand). I think should any cycling occur it would be due to the sand bed disturbance and loss of life there.

Will you be adding your new sand in parts or all at once? I'm actually more concerned about that addition than the actual upgrade...does adding new sand cause cycling?

It's not too bad. I moved my 75 from one side of the room to the other and wasn't swapping tanks. My living room was covered in 10 gallon tanks, rubbermaids and basically anything that holds water. I didn't have anyone help me except the kids helped move the actual tank.

Wow, you have 120lbs of sand in a 120? How deep is your sand bed? I just put the sand in mine and only used about 55lbs. I put rock on the glass then filled the sand around it.

Congrats on the upgrade! Glad no issue from crack!!

But the suction cup deal is funny I work with those a lot at my job doing heat treat on aircraft parts. We did 20 12'x5'x".120" side skins for a 777. We use the suction cups on them. But anyway I understand scared of them haha! The 0.190 skins we move are HEAVY! And when stuff is wet after quenching and rinse tank, suctions tends to slip...

Yeah if I remember correctly it came out to 115 lbs or something like that. It is from .5-1.5 inches depending on where. I want to put sand in the new tank and then my current sand on top of it. My goal is to end up with about a 4" sand bed.

Thanks everybody! Here is a picture for the time being. I cut up some chalice to sell to help pay for this thing to get going lol.

You may notice the skimmer in the tank. I have decided to upgrade to an ASM G4+ rated for 400 gallons. So it should keep the water nice and clean

Thank you! Just an update on the new tank. The crack has caused no issue and I may be moving soon. So I am going to wait until then to setup the new tank. I think the tank will be fine until then. I looked back at some tank pictures and I guess the "crack" has been there for some time and I hadn't noticed it or something.
