Came home from a week vacation. The hawkfish was acting fine and himself. He was being fed through an automatic feeder but I gave him his favorite food as soon as I got home. A little more than usual of frozen food. Fast forward to the next morning and I tried to feed him again and he wouldn’t eat. That was very strange. He was hiding which was very unusual. And then at 3 am when I went to check on him he was dead. I ran parameter checks and everything is fine. Tank is well established etc. Could be have overeaten? dang I liked this fish. Most personality I’ve had in one. RIP hawkey puck. :(

Strange. I have one as well, and if I experienced what you described, I would be perplexed too. Did you have him many years?.... maybe it was just one of those things...

I've only had him a little over a month. It is just so strange how quick he died.

Well, I suppose it wasn’t a quick-killer like Velvet, or your other fish would also be facing the Grim Reaper . Maybe he never did settle into captivity well from his ocean voyage. (?) If all else is well in your tank and you liked him, I buy another one.

Its hard to say, because I only have inverts and him. I would assume it was something specific to fish as my conch, starfish, and all other inverts are ok. I think I am going to go species specific on this tank now and do a peacock mantis shrimp I've been eyeing at the lfs for a few weeks. I will certainly grab one in the future.

I had the same thing happened to a small harlequin bass. It was swimming and eating well, but then became reclusive, and was dead within about three weeks. Looking back, I’m pretty sure it was Marine Velvet.

Sorry to hear that! I haven't even looked up that, but have certainly heard of it many times. Just never effected me from what I can tell.
