Longest hiding period, Yellow Coris Wrasse?

I added a Yellow Coris Wrasse from LiveAquaria to my tank. He seemed healthy, the lights were off and he swam around and then sat on the sand bed in the corner. I turned the lights back on later and the next time I checked on the tank he had vanished. I never saw anything picking on him, I added a Bristletooth tang at the same time and the tank boss (Mimic tang) was busy picking on the bristletooth (they're fine after about a half day of aggression). I understand that Yellow Wrasses often hide in the sand when new, and from what I've read, up to two weeks. Well, the two week period ended yesterday. At what point do I give up and assume he didn't make it for some reason?

Give it at least a month. I know it's possible, I've heard anecdotes of them hiding for even longer. Whatever you do, don't go looking for it by sifting around in the sand. That's a surefire way to cause problems.

I had a melanurus wrasse disappear one time for like two months. It may have even been longer. I have no idea where he was but one day he was there again eating with everyone else.

I had a fairy wrasse disappear for months. Constantly checked around the tank thinking he somehow got out even with a lid on. Randomly showed up for dinner time one day and he was a normal member of the fishy community after that. Very odd.

So I was perusing the posts on here and someone was asking about alternatives to a yellow coris wrasse, and h. leucoxanthus was mentioned, which is a yellow wrasse with a white belly. I think that's actually what I got. I looked back on my Live Aquaria receipt and it said "Sri Lankan Yellow Wrasse" or something like that, and the yellow-top or whatever it's called is from there. I remember seeing his white belly and thinking I didn't realize they had that....so. From what I can tell they are very similar fish in terms of temperament and behavior. Not sure if that changes expectations with respect to hiding in the sand?

Mines been gone since the first night 4 months ago.. lol I gave up.. I even got a replacement one.. maybe he died and the original one is out..

Oops, I thought I answered...no, I did not. I think he's gone.

I saw one pop up on Diver's Den....an actual h. chrysus I think (the full yellow one, not the white belly like I had last time) so I grabbed it. It's a little guy, introduced him today. I watched him swim around on the bottom with the lights off for a bit. Then he went into the rock work a little ways, encountered my cleaner shrimp and there was a puff of sand and now he's vanished. I don't if that was him swimming away or burrowing...if he was burrowing that is incredibly fast lol.

Now we wait.

I just added two yellow Coris Wrasse to my 42g tank. One of them I have seen a couple times. They are both mia today. I don’t have a top but have not seen them on the floor. Hoping they are just hiding somewhere. I don’t want them to die and pollute the tank. I am having to restrain myself from moving around the rock work looking for them.

Again I forgot to update....this new one stayed hidden for maybe two days tops, and he's out and about swimming boldly around and eating like a pig. Definitely better luck this time!

Mine hides occasionally and goes to bed way earlier than the tank. If something startles him in the morning you won’t see him till the next day. After initial introduction he was missing for a day or two. I always worry when i can’t find him and look all around on the floor because he is basically the king and centerpiece of the tank. Can definitely disappear. Always show back up thankfully.

My yellow wrasse went into hiding for 18 days after I added a white tail tang. I thought he was dead but he decided to come out today. Glad to see. Now I just got to keep an eye on him since the tang and a couple others are treating him like a new addition.

my yellow wrasse never revealed itself after initial tank introduction for two months. I just assumed it had died. I do have some pretty aggressive clown fish pair to newcomers and I am assuming they scared him so bad that’s why he hid for so long. I just don’t know how he survived lol. But he did eventually come out. Very interesting fish
