Pick this up. customer gave to my LF S from tank shut down

Almost looks like a hypomelantistic specimen, but the black along the trailing edges of the dorsal and anal fins means it isn't one of those.

Could it be a rusty/flame hybrid? If not, then I think it is one from the Marquesas that is just a bit more faded.

I’d be putting that into my own reef. I couldn’t care less about coral if I had a flame that pretty!

Are the nearly-white blotches around its face HLLE?

Angelfish seem to vary a lot. Coral beauty’s seem all over the map, flames with thick bars, thin bars, more orange and not so yellow background. Pygmy angels that are almost entirely blue and so on.

Not sure how big it is but reminds me of one of the juvi flame angelfish we saw when they captive bred them.

I wanted to breed flame angels the females have smaller blue bands like in the picture and have less color then the full males.

It’s a female flame angel. They turn male and look more pretty. I always wanted to get my hands on a female for mating.
I’ve kept Flames since 1973, and I don’t think so, based on colors alone

That's quite an interesting fish, if it had shorter vertical bars you could talk about some relationship with C.shepardi, but that doesn't seem to be the case, I'm curious if the paler markings near the eyes of the fish belong to the coloration of its scales.

Fins alone look female
Females don’t usually have a different colour to the males. The only obvious difference is the fins.
This is a female but if it was a regular flame then the whole body colour would look the same as their males. This specimen looks somewhat like a hybrid with a close relative, potentially a Shephardi or a Rusty.

I'm

not sure
Thanks everyone, He/She in my 75g softy tank

cool fish! thanks for sharing!

What is going on with its head? Is it head and lateral line or maybe just more odd coloring?

It's a little different, but not that unique.

Females have less pointed anal and dorsal fins with less blue on them. The head's a little faded from water quality and diet, and possibly the whole fish is stresses from capture and the cup it's in.

Flames are also highly variable in color from different collection points. Here's 3 examples from Scott Michael's Angelfish and butterfly book:

Looks close to the Micronesia one to me. Hawaii ones are more red, but probably not commonly collected now.

IMO, I think those examples might cost a few cents more than a normal colored flame angel, I have no idea how much the particular specimen we're talking about in this thread cost, but after watching the video I can tell it's a fish smaller than I thought, maybe we will have to see its coloration and development in a few months and that will be very helpful, the paleness in the face keeps making me think, I have not seen stressed dwarf angelfishes that only show a pale coloration on the face, or maybe I don't remember any, so either way it's a beautiful fish and best of luck with it.

hey I came across this description that sounds like your fish.

Another phenotype occurs in French Polynesia and the Marquesas, where the body is again orange, but with only pale indications of barring and a single prominent blotch near the pectoral fin.
