I want to get a digital camera but I want it to take good pics of my reef tank any suggestions on what kind I should get? My ipad an iPhone camera just isn't cutting it.

I want to keep it under 400 if possible I need a new camera anyway would like one that works good on the tank.

Did you see Tupes' post? Selling a two year old Canon Rebel Xsi with 2 lenses for $350.

Depending on how close you want to get, you may need to buy a macro lens.

Was just going to recommend an older DSLR was the best bang for the buck.

This is also the same camera I got just for taking pics of the tank and it's a heck of a good price with 2 lenses. I think with the 55-250mm lens it comes with, you probably won't need a dedicated macro. There was a bit of a learning curve if you are not familiar with SLR type cameras (I wasn't), but just make sure you get a tripod and you'll be taking some surprising pictures in no time.

For the money I would check out the Canon G-12. It's a hybrid between a simple point and shoot and a base line dslr. It doesn't have interchangable lenses but it does have a macro mode that does a pretty good job and a manual white balance mode that does a really good job at color rendition in a reef tank. I have one that has been really good to me when I don't want to hassle with the DSLR.

Thanks for sharing my thread. Much appreciated but has been sold. Thanks for looking out.

@defugium slr cameras are really nice and have a very wide range of uses especially with the macro lens and telephoto

Thanks tubes I'll look into those don't know much about taking pics or cameras guess it's a good time to learn

I use the sony nex 5n. It takes DSLR quality photos and the lens can be interchanged plus it doesn't break the bank. There are listings on ebay in your price range.

Here are some images I took at my local fish store using the stock lens and +2 and +4 macro lens filters:
