Currently I have an aqua clear 110 on my 46g bowfront reef tank I like it and it gives good flow and great filtration but I'm wanting to go to a canister for more filter media and a uv sterilizer and use the aqua clear for back up if needed I see they have canisters with uv in them but I would rather use an inline so I can better control the the green alge in my tank it not bad and been doing regular water changes and proper water levels in all parameters just want to get it better controlled also a inline heater if possible to clean up the look of the tank up want to go to a sump but my stand is not ment for one but I can fit a canister in it no problem looking at eheim pro, fluval 406, Jbj but im open to any input on which one would work best with my tank I have asked around and eheim seems to be a great setup and has worked well with what I want to do just don't want to buy a filter and not have it work well
Thanks
Here's a pic of my tank

I use the Fluval canister filters and love them. I run them on both of my tanks. It is easy to maintain them and I have found a good place to order replacement parts that ships quickly.

your picture shows for me as really small....is there a way I can enlarge it? I would really like to see your tank :) I've used fluvals in the past - work very well....

I agree that the fluval Is a great canister but for a reef tank? If you are planning on gfo or carbon I think that would be okay. But if you are using it to provide filtration for your tank I would consider other options in my opinion all you need is a good protein skimmer, live rock and circulation. Canister filters can be a nitrate problem if not maintained regularly.

Mike007: I've been running Fluval canisters in all my tanks since the beginning. I'm now adding skimmers (Reef Octopus BH1000 on the 70-gallon, and BH2000 on the 100 gallon). I enjoy the crystal-clear water the canisters provide, and clean them often. Are you saying that my skimmers can replace the canisters & maintain the clarity? If so, I like the idea of keeping the canisters running for GFO & carbon. Sure would be a lot less work!

I have a reef octopus BH 1000 on there right now and an aqua clear 110 I would like to put a sump in but the stand will not accommodate one though it will accommodate a canister just wondering if the canister is a good idea still since I have a protein skimmer and I do 10% weeklies/bi weekly water changes and clean my filter out every time if I go with a canister and keep up routinely cleaning I shouldn't have any problems with nitrates or any other levels

Reefer: Like I mentioned earlier, I've been running Fluval's in all my tanks, and have just started running HOB skimmers. While my experience tells me you can have a healthy tank using canisters, you may still have problems with levels, namely, nitrates. I clean mine weekly. No matter how clean you get the media and other internal parts, they will still harbor nitrates/waste matter. The lowest I've gotten my tank nitrates is 15-20%. Early on, it was higher. You would have to disassemble the canister completely & replace filter media, carbon, etc, weekly to have a chance of lowering the nitrates, but I still don't think it would be "0". It's a choice you have to make, and definitely not a method to choose if you aren't 100% in the hobby. It's a choice I did make, and have no regrets.
