Hi all I have had my new system for about 2 to 3 months now and looking to get a clean up crew for it . It’s a 90g dt with 40g sump am starting to get a little bit of algae growing now and thought it would be good to start adding . I know I would like a fighting cronch or 2 for the sand and some turbos Forsure . I have a uchin in my other tank but little worried to bring him over since it has a few pest in it what else would you recommend. I will be qt them for at least 30 days befor going in to my tank

QT cuc is a waste of time. What will they eat in a sterile qt environment? Nothing? The chances of them bringing a fish parasite or pathogen is nil. You should have put cuc in as soon as you puts the lights on and the tank Was cycled.

That was a little condescending. Chill.

OP I would look at reef cleaners. They have packages you can buy. And QT is fine just make sure they have something to eat, algae discs if you need to.

cerith and astrea snails are good. Blue legged hermits too.

good luck!

I have several Mex Turbo snails amongst my CUC. The good news is they do a great job quickly cleaning up algae on rocks/glass. The bad new is they have knocked several frags off the rock. They are like M1 Abrams moving around the tank. :)

You can get extra shells which should make them leave the snails alone
They have extra shells (trochus shells and ones I put in myself) but still will mess with the ceriths for fun/food. They never take their shells because they are too small.

I just thought they would have nothing to graze on and would have died

That’s for the replys and so qt is a waist ?

Qt for snails and other cuc help determine what of that shipment is dead vs alive getting a variety of shells helps hermit agression for they are very picky also feeding enough is very important

IN MY EXPERIENCE Turbo snails Always fall and end up on their back my turbo snails can’t flip over I’ve heard of some people saying theirs can, Anyway it’s annoying flipping them over so they don’t get eaten I’ve already had two eaten so far they’re great cleanup crew but just be cautious I heard trochus snails can flip themselves. Also I believe margarita snails are the most underrated cleanup crew they’re small they eat like wild hogs and I’ve never had to flip one over. My conch is absolutely amazing would highly recommend!

It's very true on flipping snails me nirites and astreus are a pain(also partially due to the trigger who likes flipping them and eating them)

Is there a difference between the fighting conch and the orange lip ? Am going to order some but the girl said they only had orange lip conch

So, I did not qt my cuc, and yes they brought in disease.

So I am someone in the camp of, yeah qt can be beneficial. I may not do it because I am risk-preferred, but that does not mean I'd say qting cuc is a waste of time lol.

Small chance is still a chance, and a chance you may not want to take.

As for the composition itself, I like to go for a good mix. I personally tend to just get a bunch of different species, say from a place like https://www.saltyunderground.com/3-marine-invertebrates that sell them individually, and yeah, means there's more different types of diets and therefore more likely to clean up different types of algae and stuff. Basically I just get one each of whatever has a shell lol.

depending on your fish, I would go for 2x fighting conch, 5 nassarius/turbo snails and a shrimp (peppermint or cleaner). You can substitute the snails for hermit crabs if you'd like. I would go for red crabs as they are less likely to kill the snails. GL :)

Blue tipped hermits and really good at what the do but are very agressive going off what majestic said Red tipped are less so

Scarlet reef hermits are the least aggressive with other critters. You have to make sure to get the right shape of shell (look them up online to see the shell style they like), as they have specific preferences. They won't fight or attack other hermits, in fact they'll be bullied by other hermit species. They shouldn't go after snails unless they're really hungry or desperate for a shell.
