I am currently in the process of building a 40 breeder. I already have 2 AI Primes and have the chance to get another at a really good price. Is 3 Primes overkill for a 40 breeder?

Quick answer, NO. I think 3 x primes is ideal. You will run them at a lower power, prolong life, get better spread, etc. If you are getting a good deal, go for it.

What are you planning to keep?

I would consider keeping the two Primes and putting them in a hybrid fixture with some T5’s

I will be the odd person and ask, how much are you paying for the AI Prime, reason I ask is that if spread is what you are after then I would buy a hybrid fixture and add the 2 existing primes.

Let’s just say LESS than 90.00. Guy is getting out of hobby. Nothing wrong with it and it comes with a mount

I have 2 on a 24” tank and think the coverage is ideal. One every 12 inches is a solid plan.

Great thanks guys. You just made me feel much more confident about putting on my tank with the others. As of right now the tank is going to start off with LPS and softies but I will eventually venture into the SPS domain. Still need to do more research before I dive into that side of corals.
