I have those, there’s not enough flow. Tried to make my own, using PVC Pipe and my Miter Saw, succeeded in ruining a blade.
How about a flat strainer? They certainly will allow for more flow. I use one as a strainer for my full siphon line intake in my Modular Marine ghost style overflow set up.

The Flat Strainers are terrible about moving water. When I had my 90 gallon up and running, I moved my return pump out of the sump, due to the heat it produce. Also that flat one produced a whirlpool, that pulled air into the pump. That’s why I bought the long clear strainers. I’ve looked and looked on the internet for those strainers and can’t find them. I know they were from an Aquaculture supplier.How about a flat strainer? They certainly will allow for more flow. Depends on the specific application I guess... In my application, I found the exact opposite. The long strainer caused vortices to form when used on the full siphon line in the external drain box on my ghost style overflow set up. The flat strainer solved this and eliminated air getting sucked down the full siphon line. Also found that the larger slits on the flat strainer were less prone to clogging too.
