Hi guys,

I just upgraded to a new 40B, and don’t love the way the aquascape looks. Any pointers? As always, thanks!

Third photo is probably the best, but I don't see any way to edit and remove the other two.

To be honest, I'm kinda diggin it too. Ample space for coral placement. Tried to think of what I would do differently, and came up empty. What don't you like about it?

Thanks, guys! I just feel like it doesn’t follow the rule of thirds. I don’t hate it, I only feel like it could be better. I bet it’ll grow on me as I start flying corals down.

It is not bad.

So many people worry about aquascape aesthetics. You need to make it so you have good places for coral to grow, a open aquascape to not inhibit flow and places for fish to hide when they need to get away.
After a while once corals grow out you do not see the aquascape anyway.

I also had an issue with the rule of thirds in my tank. I think the aquascape looks good. Use the rule of thirds to place your most dominant corals. I have the two points of interesection dominated by one large trumpet coral on the bottom left intersection and a stylophora growing into a colony on the top right. A nice contrast.

Also focus on puting corals together that have a nice contrast. Put a forest fire digitata slightly above a neon green monti cap. Put contrasting acans next to each other and let it grow out. Use the color wheel for that.

As for rule of thirds. Get on instagram and follow accounts with the same size tank as you with aquascape ideas you like. There's lots of designs.

There's the nice one Piece of liverock formation that looks like an island that you have going on which I love. I have the same concept for my 40b. And there's the two island concept (One island that is to the left and to the right.

I'm still not satisfied with what I have for an aquascape. But there is one thing I did learn and this is important.

The coral you have will be your aquascape.

Be sure to place your coral in places where you know will look good when it grows out. I had a hollywood chalice colony that completly filled out my left side of the 40b. The tank aquascape was beautiful. Until it broke off and now it's an odd open area on the left side.

There's some odd area's in your scape but as long as you put coral in it's place it should be fine.

Looks good to me. Rules are made to be broken!
Is the tank only visible from the front ?taken into consideration the most viewed angle or sides (seating area or standing watching the tank ) and try to have the scape show most of the tank from those angles bu having a lower scape that goes higher facing those views to get the most of the tank.
I'd be very happy with the scape u have now.

I think it looks great! It’s all in the eye of the beholder. I think I’m gunna try the drilling and plexi rods method of aquascaping.

If you want some advice on change, I'd consider creating some negative space between two rock areas, either one third of the way from the left or right. It's hard to see in the photo, but although there are lots of caves, the rockwork does appear a bit monolithic.

Playing more with depth could also create some visual interest.
