I'm looking to clear my water up, to where it looks like my fish are floating in mid air
what's the best way people have accomplished this?
carbon reactor?
just bag of carbon?

it turns out that cleaning your reef from the bottom up, not from the top down, lends a 100% clear aquarium where you dont have to scrape glass for a long time. not saying folks are down for this much work, but am saying thats fifty pages of the cleanest reefs on file for those who were willing.

practical uses:

if anyone is moving homes, you can have a totally clean reef, the cleanest it will ever be. to attain that condition we have to take your reef apart...and when moving, you've no alt choice.


handy for nano reefs, its not hard to take apart a nano reef and totally reset its age while keeping all the rocks and aged corals (bed replacements lend 100% clean nanos)

its also handy for folks who are not playing around with a given invasion. We have a few 120+ gallon setups in there who weren't messing around, they opted for laser clean vs invaded look. if i had to summarize the effects of that thread on 400 reef tanks it would be to absolutely force the clean compliant condition without any hesitation whatsoever. we dont even take time to ID any invasions, ever. too busy rip cleaning.

other methods polish your water and still leave filth in the rocks and sand. we dont.

I run a skimmer, UV, filter sock and carbon reactor. Here's an end to end shot of my 120g (4 ft long) tank.

If you pulled the filter sock off healty, mature reef tanks they would still be laser clean...just have some particles. The index of refraction is high with dense salt water so it gives the illusion of clarity over FW.

In fact, I've never seen a healthy reef tank that wasn't laser clear.

Its typically the inside of the glass/plexiglass needing cleaning that makes it look murky. If your tank is hazy something is wrong.

I have a lot of large, zoa colonies and they scrub the water clean as well. I could grind up a big Mac in a blender, toss it in my tank and the water would be perfectly clear a few hours later.

Ozone helps yellowing of the water. I use mine once a week.

I have 120 gallon system running ATS and 150 protein skimmer. 3 Tbls phosgaurd and 7 Tbls carbon change every 2 weeks out of my reactor . Put a half teaspoon reef builder to each gallon of make up water since I am running bare bottom. Calcium when needed. Reef plus twice a week.
