Hi,

I just bought a 125g tank and stand a week ago.

I'm selling my:

  • 55 gallon oak tank & stand with tops and lights
  • Pro System 75 Wet/Dry (w/built-in Protein Skimmer & Rio pump) and Pondmaster (model 5) mag-drive return pump. I have the overflow kit and all connections.
  • Marineland heater
So what I'm looking to buy for my 125g:

  • Wet/Dry (w/Return Pump)
  • Protein Skimmer
  • Lighting
  • Heater
  • Tops
I like the Marineland Wet/Dry systems. Advice is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

i would just build my own sump. its much cheaper and you can customize it to your liking. there is a wealth of info in DIY sumps.

Thanks! That's what I thought about doing but wasn't sure how it'd turn out.

Can someone please help me out and send me a link or something? Because I'm new to this site and I can't find any DIY wet/dry sump posts.

If you have live rock I would avoid a wet/dry and use the rock and a good skimmer. You could use the 55 for your sump/refugium and sell the rest of the items from it or get a 33 long to use instead.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm gonna check out that link. I was gonna try and use my 55g for a wet/dry sump. But it might be too hard getting it to fit under my 125g tank/stand. A 33g long is a great idea! I'll check the measurements on that.

You said I might not need a wet/dry, why's that? That'd be so much easier for me to make a sump, rather than a wet/dry if that's the case!

Thanks Again!

A wet dry filter is for bacteria to build up in the bio media. If you have a descent skimmer and a lot of live rock you will have the bacteria in your live rock to help your nitrification process. A good skimmer will take a lot of waste out of the water before it breaks down in your tank, the end result should be a process where you dont have as much nitrate building up as fast.

lighting i would say (2) 250 se 20k radiums, using lumen max elite reflectors (will give you some nice coverage, also is what i am using and i am very pleased). as far as ballast maybe galaxy ballast. (i wish thats what i had)

as far as tops for the tank go. i would not use glass tops. they will just contribute to holding in the heat. if you want to cover the tank for fish from jumping then use the screen mesh. can get it on here from jimsflies.

Welcome, I agree, I would use the 55 for the sump/fuge and get a good skimmer. That is what I plan on doing when I upgrade from my 55 in Feburary.
