Looking for lots of Live Rock

I am in serious need of 200-300 lbs of live rock. If you have some to sell, please let me know. Getting stuff together for my 125g and my parents 50g. So like i said if you have some please tell me and name your price. I just don't want to pay the standard $8-11 at the lfs.

Be careful buying that much, if you find it in large batches, cause you may find that the two tanks can't hold that much rock, depending on what kind it is and how you arrange it. Also, the best price may wind up buying some that has hair algae on it. Last time I bought rock, it was pretty well covered. I scrubbed each piece a couple minutes with a wire brush and put it in the tank.

Oh, and if you buy dry rock, you canget it as low as $2.50lb online. It doesn't take that long for it to become "live" anyway.

yeah, i guess you are right.. marine depot has live rock for fairly cheap, i was just avoiding to pay shipping charges on a bunch of rock.. i didn't expect to buy it all from one person, i was more hoping to do 20lbs from one person, 30lbs from another, and so on.. but yes you are right, you can never know what hitch hikers you are getting..

How to choose good live rock

If you have 5 weeks, make it. I made approximately 250 pounds for my 150. Costed me roughly 20 cents/lb. I can help if need be...

I bought rock from Premium Aquatics and I absolutely love it. I think it was the Bali rock.

I've got a little bit but it's not exactly alive anymore.

I like your strategy of buying a little from a lot of people!! But you're somewhat more likely to get pests that way, unfortunately.

I bought mine from probably 5 different people and didn't really have much for problems out of it. It was probably partially luck, partially the methods I used when cleaning it. The last 150+ lbs I bought, I scrubbed clean in freshwater, let it sit for about 2-3 days, then put it in the tank. This probably killed most everything on the rock though.

I probably averaged about $1.25/lb for what I bought, considering what I had in items I traded for it. I'm really pleased with the results. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable making rock out of cement or whatever else.

I can send pictures upon request to anyone who wants to see my tank with the DIY rock in it. The only difference between DIY rock that is properly cured (for ph) is that mine took 5 weeks to cure out, and I made all of it for less than the shipping costs of bought rocks. But hey, to each his own. I bought a tank with about 50 pounds of rock in it to seed my DIY rock. I've even got a little bit of rock that came from you Engloid.

You are defiantly right about the pests...

i have been looking into brs reef saver dry rock.. that stuff makes some pretty incredible aquascapes..

Eh, I'm with Spencer on being leery of making my own rock. If you guys have done it and are happy with it, more power to you. But I will always just buy good live rock.

I've made my own before and used it in my 40g. Worked fine but I prefer the look of real rocks with lots of holes. And the rock I made was grey

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but there was a recent post about the "reef saver" rock sometimes having problems with phosphates....from it being buried in the ground for so many years.

Well I know in brs' video they mentioned slightly higher phosphates, so there has to be some validity to that. Another issue they mention is the weight. Where you would buy 1lb of live rock, that same size reef saver rock is gonna weigh about 2lbs. So with large quantities I would lose double the water volume over live rock I could have in my tank. This is a just a theory though. But the aquascapes are so gosh darn cool!! And DIY live rock isn't really an option for me. It doesn't look like rock to me, it just looks like blobs of concrete IMO.

I think uve got it backwards. Live rock weighs more mostly because of water in it when they weigh. Reefsaver is dry so should get more rock per lbs. And pukani from brs is even lighter its like dbl the ammount per pound as reefsaver.
