So I've bought everything I need to get my 90 gallon up and running except for the rock. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy? I just checked my lfs and they're trying to sell dry rock for $6/lb which is definitely more than I would like to pay. I plan on adding marinepure blocks to my sump later on down the road, so I'm looking for around 50-60 lbs (is this a good idea? I figured because marinepure is extremely porous it will be able to take up the slack if I go light on other rock.) Thanks for any responses

Facebook groups. Find other local readers selling some. BRS sells reef saver dry rock at a decent price

I bought my rock from BRS. I haven't put it in my tank yet, as I'm still putting the finishing touches on my new tank. I'm impressed with it so far in the dry form, we'll see how it is once I get it into the tank.

I had good luck with billysreef. Really clean and I think it came out to around $1.90 a pound.

Last time round, I bought from ReefCleaners. Was happy with their product, pricing was pretty good.

This time, I'm probably buying from Billy's Reef Connection. Price is even better. Local fish store brought in a pallet of rock from Billy's, it was some good looking stuff.

The other one to keep in mind is Marco's Rocks. Good product, including specialized shelf and cut stuff. Price is slightly higher, but really... building a marine reef system, is a few cents a pound on rock really going to have much of an impact on the overall system cost? Not really.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I really like the look (and, more importantly, the price) of the rock on Billy's Reef. If anybody else can share their experiences with them or even other companies, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for the help everyone

my local limestone quarry sells limestone rock for $20/ton.

my .02

I thought limestone would leach minerals or breakdown in the water. Is that not the case? I'm in northwest Florida, so I'm not even sure if visiting a limestone quarry is even an option for me.

Just to expand on my experience with them. My rock was very clean. I threw it all in a rubbermaid with a powerhead for about 20 minutes and then threw it in the tank with no issues whatsoever. I'm not sure if that is just the nature of that type of rock or if it was Billy's doing but it was great.

The only real problem is they can be very dense.

FWIW live rock farms like tampa bay take those limestone rocks put them in the ocean then harvest them later.

I used Marco Rocks and love them. They're dry quarried, cleaned and shaped nicely. No curing necessary because there isn't any dried organics on them and no phosphate leaching.

Amazon: search "Nature's Ocean 12-Inch Coral Base Rocks for Aquarium, 40-Pound" It's a box of usually 3 large football sized pieces and a few small pieces for about 52.00 and delivery is free. Best price I would find anywhere. Look at my avatar. That's the rock.
