Lost 5 blue tangs over 2 years

That’s velvet, you need to get any surviving fish into QT. Start the QT off at 1.0ppm copper power and ramp up to 2.0 ppm over the next 2-3 days. You can give each fish a FW dip before going into QT to buy you some time.

Is it forsure velvet? They both look okay for now but I’m just so nervous to do the qt process whenever I’ve tried I failed

If that’s ich then they have a terrible case of it. Here is a way to tell the difference ich will be raised like pieces of salt stuck to the fish. Velvet isn’t and appears as a dusting like powdered sugar

@ngoodermuth what do you think ich or velvet? Looks like velvet on the Hippo to me, but it is a fuzzy pic.

Hippo died, but the other fish are alive still. Doesnt velvet kill quick? Like 72 hours

Yes, velvet kills quickly typically. How long has this been going on?

Well my flame and yellow have been with the white spots for a couple weeks now so I don’t know if it’s velvet

If it’s been a few weeks it is probably a bad case of ich then. I would still QT all fish with copper (copper power) run your display fallow for 76 days and not have to worry about it anymore

Hi everyone. I am new to this site and after losing my last blue tang i am sure i want to start doing qt all my other friends dont qt and have a healthy tank. im jealous. at one point i had a powder brown tang, blue tang, and they both got sick after i introduced a moorish idol into my tank that got ich. from then the powder brown tang started sitting at bottom of tank and breathing hard, but eating normal. same thing happened to blue tang and since then have not been able to keep a blue tang. its frustrating. i cant tell if its ich or something else. i am unsure how to do a qt/hospital tank because ammonia constantly went up and i have killed a couple blue tangs due to that. i just need help with a good routine to start.
Welcome - according to some - they can be tricky. Suggestion - buy they only from a source that you can verify that they are healthy for xx time - you pick it - perhaps a month - with no copper or other medications. This will probably increase your success. In any case again welcome

Blue tangs are the worst for ich. STAY AWAY! Leave dory in the ocean. I have failed with that fish even when I quarantine. Sorry for your losses.
This is ridiculous. No offense - If you have properly qt'd fish its not a problem there are lots of articles suggesting that tangs - including blue tangs are at no higher risk of CI than others.

Blue tangs tolerate copper very well. I’ve QT’ed several for myself and friends.

Most fish purchased from LFS will come with something. I recommend to QT all fish. I’ve learned the hard way over 20yrs in the hobby.

I now keep my favorite and the infamous Powder Blue Tang with no problems due to QTing.

Good luck y’all.

The spots look pretty big for velvet but that is bad if it’s ich, I agree. @HotRocks is better than me at telling the difference... to me it’s sort of irrelevant, see spots ... grab the copper bottle lol

I’m sorry for your losses, OP. There are some really great sticky threads here regarding quarantine and preventative treatments. Unfortunately, with the state of the supply chain it will be VERY difficult to keep a blue tang long-term without a thorough QT process

Looks like both ich and velvet to me. Pics aren't very clear. At any rate I agree just get them in copper. Best course of action.

I had one episode of either severe CI - or velvet - which wiped out all my fish - after I bought fish from an 'unnamed' online vendor. Out of a sense of disaster - I left my tank fallow for perhaps more than the recommended period - then decided to buy fish from one source - that QT'd their fish - and allowed them to be observed for a time before purchase in a copper free environment. Hope this answers your question...

oh ic. where did you start to buy those fish? do you personally qt yourslef and do you have a blue tang?

Tangs are pretty hardy when it comes to copper and I would recommend copper power because it’s cheleted and easier on fish. The Hanna high range copper checker (BRS has them) makes running copper in QT a breeze and lowers the risk to your fish.

I have 2 yellow tanks and a purple tang in my current tank - all from the same source. I think I answered the part about whether I QT - the answer is 'no'.

I have a powder blue that I’ve had for about 2 years and he’s healthy and happy. I’m able to keep him healthy because I QT everything that goes in my tank. I learned the hard way a few years ago with velvet when I didn’t QT.

Coppersafe will work also and it’s cheleted, just watch your levels and fish as I think there may have been a consistency issue at one time. Was it coppersafe that had that issue? @HotRocks @4FordFamily ?
