Over 6 months ago I lost one of my clownfish from a mated pair.

Should I buy another, or is that just asking for trouble? Obviously I don’t want to get another just to have him/her killed. But he just seems unhappy, doesn’t swim around the tank, and just hangs out behind the HOB overflow. I actually squirt food back there since he just peeks around the overflow at feeding time and won’t fully come out.

PS - I’ve only had the tank for a little over a year, so I’m new to reefing, and just thought someone might be able to give me some advice.

My clown lost its mate a couple years ago after being together for maybe 9 years. She now hangs out in the corner like you describe. I haven't pulled the trigger on another potential mate yet but plan to soon. Just get a small one so it's still male and you should be ok. If you see excessive bullying then take out the small one. They are easy to catch.

I have done that. I had a pair for about a year before I lost one. It was the smaller male. I replaced him with a small young clown without any problem. The female chased him around for about a day and then everything was fine. They have been together now for 3 years.

okay thanks guys, guess she’ll be getting a new buddy then. I’ll make sure he’s smaller.
