Hi all. I have (had) a mated pair of maroon clownfish. I acquired them with my 100 gallon tank so I don't know how old they are. The female is about 5 inches and the male was about 3 inches. He is the one that just died. I don't know why. Anyway, in my 56 tank I have an ocellaris that is maybe 2 inches and I've had him probably 9 months.
What I wanted to know is if I can put him in with the maroon. Will they pair up or even get along?
The other fish in the 100 g is a luner wrasse, yellow damsel, and another damsel that is black with a white vertical line. (Not sure exactly of the type)
So I am a little concerned about the little one getting beet up.
What do you think?

I highly doubt the little clown would be alive long with that large maroon clown. They, maroon clowns, are known to be very aggressive.

I wouldn't risk putting another clown with her.

I have an over eight year old Maroon that will probably bite anything it can dart out and bite. IT IS MEAN. I suspect your damsel with the white vertical stripe is an adult Neon Velvet Damsel; they lose their colorful blue stripes when they get older. It is also a mean fish. Bottom line is a new clown to the tank most likely won't make it.

Female Maroon Clowns are known for harassing the males to death.

You're stuck like I am with a big Maroon, so you have to add fish and that are fast and wary or really mean, too.

My Maroon killed a large Raccoon Butterfly about a month ago. Bit it by the anus. They were in the same tank for over two years. It also seemed like it missed it's friend. They're so mean they don't know what they're doing!

What you're contemplating is called Haute Couture Pairing and there's tricks to it's success. ibluewater and alphaaquaculture both offer mixed pairs and IMO would be good resources for you.

After 9 months, your ocellaris is most likely a female. 2 females would not end well -- even worse with one of those females being a maroon. There has been one report (( from Rod, of "Rod's Food" and Onxy clowns )) of a female Clarkii (( at least one from the Clarkii complex )) reverting to male, but this is the only time I have heard about it, so not worth the risk.

Think it would be OK to add another ocelleris to mine? I was also contemplating doing that too.

Get the smallest one that you can --- while ocellaris are a bit more mellow, I would still use an acclimation box to see how the existing clown feels about the new introduction.

I have a 9 year old maroon clown and acquired a ocellaris clownfish when a friend shut his tank down. I was worried about adding the ocelatis but everything went well and the two are friends. So I guess I am lucky and have one of the nice matron clowns.

Clownfish will surprise ya. I have an Orange Skunk pairing with a McCullouch- didn't see that coming. Their relationship went from hate/hate, to love/hate, to love/love. Not sure if I should laugh or cry.

I will keep it separate I also need to make sure my damsels be nice.

Do clowns really need an anemone?

Clowns don't need an anemone. They will be fine without one. Although if they had one and then it is taken away they will probably go through a depression period that may not end.

As far as pairing your Maroon with any fish... it can be done but its going to be very important that you keep an eye on whatever male you put in there. Especially in the beginning. Don't be afraid to put your hand in there and separate them/stop them from fighting manually. Do whatever it takes to get them in the same tank and not fighting for at least 30min. Sometimes I use a stick so my hand doesn't have to be in there. Social acclimation boxes can be useful as well. If you see a lot of fin damage then separate the female so she doesn't become more dominant of her territory. Also, its a good idea to let the female be alone for awhile first. They are social fish and if you can get over the initial aggression phase she will appreciate the company.

Ok, so if I decide to get an anemone, what would be a good one. I would put it in my 56g with the ocellaris. Oh, and there is a Yellow tang, 2 kinds of Damsels, a Coral banded Shrimp and a Purple Lobster. How should I care for them properly? I had one when I acquired my 100g but the gal said it had been slowly shrinking.:squigglemouth: It was about 2inches when I got the set up. The little thing moved out of sight and now I'm pretty sure it has died. :rip: I've moved rocks around carefully trying to find it, but no luck.

Are you breeding the McCullough? These are impossible to get these days....Nice fish!
