Lost another fish

Well, I came home to another dead fish. :-( Most of the guys in QT have been doing good, but the firefish has been somewhat inactive and looking stressed (to me anyway). I did my 4th transfer of TTM today, and I think it may have been too much for him. :-(

The other two fish are moving around and seem fine.

TTM is stressful, ammonia builds up more than ideal during TTM, and fire fish can be weak fish until established.

Sorry for your trouble, TTM is typically worth the trouble for ich prevention.

I agree with @Squirrel_reefer bummer. One fish at a it and let the system adjust. Also being such a new system there is such a low bio load the swimming buddies are having a hard time with such clean water.

Yes I had to pull him out of the tank because my clowns were pecking at him. He lived 2 days after that before passing away. Thank you

I've tried to get firefish through QT twice with no luck. Really wanted some in my DT but not willing to try again.

I got two, about a month apart. Didn't QT either one (high regarded LFS purchase). Never had any problems except between the two firefish. One was a little bigger than the other...and I think he knew it. lost both of them in a tank crash, found one with hermits enjoying some fresh sushi.... very disheartening.

Thats tough to go through. I hate having to watch a fish struggle, especially such a pretty fish. sorry it didn't work out for you.

I'm sorry for your loss That's a real bummer. If you wish to explore what happend some, maybe we can come up with a learning experience from it.

Were you monitoring ammonia in the tank? Was it ever more than zero?
Were you dosing Prazipro in any of the transfer tanks?
Did you accidentally pin him against the glass at any time while trying to catch them? (I've done this on accident and didn't even realize it was hard enough to hurt until later)
Were either firefish eating well for you?

Ammonia (supposedly) wasn't present, but I do think that my first losses were due to a faulty ammonia badge, and so I wonder if it's possible that the firefish was affected and never recovered.

Were you dosing Prazipro in any of the transfer tanks?

I dosed prazi on my 1st transfer (so I'll be dosing it again on this tank so that it will be 6 days since the first dose was completed). He wasn't in prazi when he died or for a few days prior.

I also think this is possible. I was trying not to pin him, but he wasn't doing a ton of moving (he seemed "sluggish") when I went to transfer and I definitely "bumped" him against the glass (though it wasn't hard, it was harder than intended, so it may be the cause of death perhaps.

It's very possible that ammonia poisoning effected him even this long after. (methyline blue dips are good for after accidental ammonia poisoning for future reference) Bumping him while capture could have been the last straw for him.

I'll tell ya a short story about this. I had a yellow coris wrasse. Tuff little guy. Made it through flukes and ick and QT only to be pinned against the glass of the QT just seconds before being added back to the display after treatment. He was so tuff and didn't seem effected at first by my mistake. It was only a fraction of a second and I don't believe I hit him that hard, but he's so small compared to me. He went in the tank and not long after joining his buddies in the display he was lethargic on the sand not doing so hot. He died not long after, but had a "bruise" on his side where I had pinned him. I suspect internal injuries to have played the main role in mine.

The point of the story is, these guys are so delicate that even that small bump can have major effects on a tiny little fish like that especially if he's already healing from something else. It was an accident, so don't beat yourself up about it. I just hope all this helped you and anybody else reading understand what might have happened a little better.

Oddly enough, TTM is my preferred method for QT-ing firefish and other small fish.

The problem, I think, is we are "living in the age of velvet" - which TTM does not treat. @Brew12 and I have had some conversations about this. Velvet is running rampant right now through the wholesale facilities with no end in sight. Even worse, it is becoming less & less common for a fish with velvet to show physical evidence (white dots/dust); oftentimes you will only see key behavioral symptoms of velvet:

• Reduced or complete loss of appetite.
• Heavy breathing, rubbing, flashing, head twitching, erratic swimming behavior (unfortunately velvet shares all these same symptoms with ich & gill flukes.)
• Swimming into the flow of a powerhead (unique to velvet).
• Acting reclusive (velvet causes fish to be sensitive to light).
