Horrible weekend and morning... I lost my two pink skunk clownfish, first yesterday morning and other this morning. I'm hoping someone may have some insight if this may of been disease/parasite (as I did not quarantine) or water. I have had my tank running for 4 months, these were my two and only fish and have had them for probably close to two months. They had been completely fine, I do weekly water changes (last one was 1 week ago today), parameters have been in perfect ranges since adding (and before). Always ate well and swam around happily.

Here is what is new. About 2 weeks ago, purchased a bubble tip anenome which didn't start out great (that's in another blog), but seems to be fine since I found out about acclimating light. I did not quarantine; however, after acclimation, I did put in my tank water, two different batches to rid LFS water.

And.. (this is what I am thinking is culprit), Friday night I added one drop of a "new" bottle of Aquaforest Pro Bio S. I have been adding this with every other water change since I purchased clowns, this bottle had expired. Now I'm wondering, did I just put acid water in my tank and kill my fish?? Did I not buy same thing my LFS sold me (this time bought online), pretty sure I did?? Per google searches this is completely fine adding with fish, so was it rotten?? Cold weather get to it??

So devastated and have to tell me children today (I hid it yesterday - wasn't prepared).

With all that said... woke up yesterday morning and looked at tank - my clown was swimming straight up to the top of the tank (maybe gasping for air?) and then flow would push him back down towards bottom, swim right back up. My other clown was just watching and seemed like wondering if it should follow. I instantly started googling and saw some things about it possibly being startled if woken up. As it was completely fine night before - didn't hover, waited about 10 minutes and went back and (he/she) was nowhere to be found. Looking around other clown, found under rock next to it, it had passed. My other clown was still swimming around a little, but did somewhat hang out in one spot most of day and did eat last night. This morning, no clown... passed under rock as well.

After taking out of tank, they both looked pale and gills/rim around head seemed dark brown (could be normal not sure with their pink color gone). I did take picture of one that passed today... I don't know if I am allowed to post though...

Ugh!! I have lost fish before, but think this one is hitting the hardest.

I’ve seen other fish added for help, so decided to go ahead and add. I know they’re gone, but still hoping anyone can give insight on what happened...

Sorry to hear about your clowns.

Here is what I think: the anemone brought Amyloodinium (velvet) into your tank from the LFS. The timing is right, as are the symptoms. Although you didn't state it, I presume all of your invertebrates in the tank are still fine? If so, that almost 100% of the time means it was a fish disease, not a water quality issue. Now - if you lost inverts also, then you need to consider toxic water conditions, but if not, it was a fish disease.

Anemones contain mostly water, so they are very effective as acting as a "fomite" and carrying fish diseases from one tank to another.

I went to two LFS over the weekend, I haven't been to a LFS in over a year, and I was dismayed that both places mixed fish and invertebrates in their systems - I wanted to buy some scarlet cleaner shrimp from one system, and took a hard pass because the Achilles tang in the same system had ich. In another tank, I wanted some Turbo snails, but the clown in it had Brooklynella!

Thank You!! I was afraid of that. Have not lost any inverts (have about 20 snails and two fighting conchs) and Tests were fine.... so Disappointed with myself for letting this happen...

Big question is what do I do now? I read wait 8 weeks, but that was for ich. How do I keep bacteria thriving with no fish? Been seeding pods for my eventual move of my mandarin. Will my fuge and pods hold up with no waste?

First fish disease out of three tanks... will never add a thing without quarantine again..... Pretty sure I will also be returning my bubble tip.

You might aw well keep the bubble tip, it has exchanged all its water, so it is no more of a risk than the whole tank is now.

How long to leave the tank fallow is an open question. People will dogmatically tell you that it needs to be "76 days" or some other figure, but that is just extrapolation from a paper written quite some time ago. In this case, at 80 degrees F., the tank would be safe after 45 days. Since you'll be quarantining your new fish, that actually corresponds nicely with the typical quarantine period of 30 days copper followed by 2 week of prazipro.
