Lost it all: An electrical warning

Sorry to hear. When we spoke to our insurer about insuring the fish tank for flood damage they said in case of an accident, the tank and home would be covered but, no inhabitants would be.

I am so, so sorry to hear about that. That's absolutely heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you. Thank you for sharing the warning about that particular product.

Sorry for your loss.

That is the same one I have under my tank. I will be replacing it pronto!

Also interested in this question.

Did they say it shorted out due to water contact or just straight malfunction?

I had just set the QT tank up, I had this mounted to the wall about 1 foot away with drip loops on the 4 things plugged in, I had radion gen3, 2 mp10s set to 20 %(1) and one air pump supplying the sponge filter, one of the mp10 was not even plugged in just sitting there. and the heater which was still mounted to the back of the tank after the fire, at first they wanted to say a heater buy changed their mind when they saw it still in place and the fact the power strip was gone just the cord left for the most part. No one knows yet, but it seems straight forward to me, knowing what was where.

And so sorry this happened!

I inherited one of those coralife timer strips and the timer-powered outlets didn't work, so I threw it out. Many timers fail when they are running T5HO ballasts. The heavy duty ones can handle it, like the ones from BRS. I suspect that it's a similar issue

Years ago I had a fire from a defective shop light, My insurance company went after the light manufacturer.

I would suspect yours should be able to do the same, we did not have to pay any deductible

I know it does not make it better but it may take some of the sting out

Omg that is so awful. Scary too! Thank God no one was hurt and you still have your house. Your poor pets I'm so sorry

First I will say how sorry I am for your loss.
Second Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I have 2 of the same power strips currently running in my home which will be replaced tomorrow , unplugged just now.
And lastly I don't have any High end corals but I have some very nice LPS and when your rebuilt and up and running, I will be happy to send you some frags as well.
Best of luck to you and your wife.

I want to send a baby jawbreaker when you are up and running. I feel for you. We have 6 cats (yeah, I know) and as much as it would hurt to lose the fish, losing the cats would kill me. Get back to me when you are all set up.

Break we have many more then 6 cats. We are a foster family for the furry ones and I couldn't even imagine the pain of loosing any. I'm sorry this happened to you but thank you for the post. My sister uses the same timer and she will be notified as soon as my thumbs finish this sentence.

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing most of the home was difficult enough, but to lose your pets too...

Thank you so much as others have said for sharing your story. I liked a post above because I also had my insurance people out to adjust for the system. They would cover equipment, but no livestock.

I have a timer like that. It's so loud that I sometimes think it's sizzling.

I use it for Christmas lights.

For a reef, use this.

First of all I am very sorry for your loss to your family(the cats) and overall to your hobby. I had a tank crash and lost $500 of coral and I was darn near sick to my stomach.
Second of all please let me know when you are back up and running and can add corals back and I will be glad to give you a piece out of my display. Anything you would like. With 30 years in the hobby you have much valuable experience and need another set up to continue.

Hope everything will be the best as it can. Good Luck
-Ben

So Sorry for your loss, thanks for sharing your story with the reefing community. I thought my tank crash was bad but it was nothing to what you are going through. I hope you get back in the hobby once you get everything settled back in, 30 years is a long time and I'm sure we could all learn a thing or two from you.
