well the other day i lost my first fish a bicolor angel, i also have three smaller dansels in this 110 tank. this tank has been running for 10 weeks now. i added 60 lb of fuji/tongo that was already cured two weeks ago. it seems i lost the fish when i was rearranging my aquascape twice in a few hours. so maybe i stressed him out. i did notice he was swimming sideways under the rocks before he bellied up? my tank pars seemed to be ok, but my salt was a lil high 1.026 , other fish are ok. maybe the new live rock restarted the tank recycling??. or maybe the dansels hit him while i was not looking. any ideas :confuse:

Bi colors are tough. they really need a well established tank to have a chance. imo your tank is just not mature enough to support it and is why it died.

Angels are a tough fish to start a tank with. Unlike the damsels that will pretty much almost survive anything. Best thing is set up the aqua-scape the way you want and leave it alone. Let the tank mature with hardy fish for a few months at least. The add your more delicate fish.

Sorry for your loss. I've lost a few fish; it's tough to see them go. Good luck!

That sucks! I agree w/previous posts tho, bi- colors are not a starting type fish as they aren't overly hardy anyways.... But hey atleast it wasnt a $200 fish :(

Just for a hey lets rule some stuff out kinda thing tho...

how long did u have the fish?
was it eating?
did u QT?
how big was the bi-color?
how big and what damsels do u have??.... are the a trio (swim together and seem to hang out alot...)??

I know its alot of questions but all things that may help find the cause ;)

+1 on the QT ... that is the biggest tip .. always no matter where and when you get a fish always QT them its a heck of a risk adding a fish to any system .. also thinking recycle but your tank would have been all jacked up if it recycled .. 1.026 is not that high but you can always pull a gallon out of your tank and add RO DI water to replace when you took out if you want it to drop .. bicolors are really hardy fish almost like a dam ..

i QT everything i get even corals get dipped ..

sorry about your fish i started with damsels and 2 of the 4 are still living very well. They are also kinda the bullies of my tank but my tomini tang runs it. I recently lost my horned blennie i think its cause i changed my rocks around a little to much or he was just stressed from the other fish picking on him.

Tank help please

had fish 1 month ,added blue dam after 5 weeks , then 6th week added bicolor/ feeding frozen mysis shrimp cubes , only 1 pinch a day, no i did not quarintine.?? is this something i should do for all fish before adding to my 110 tank?, bicolor was 1 in long, 2 white /yellow top blue fin , 1 dark blue solid damsel seems aggressive lil devil 3/4 in long. only the two white /yellow dams hang out , the blue is a loner. i am fixing to purchse a QT tank and supplies. would you get the 20 gal or 10 gallon?? i was eventually wanting to add 2 clowns and rose tip nem, after i force them to host in the QT tank. and get rid of the 3 dams first before i put clowns hosting in my 110. my new skimmer aquamaxx cone rated 275 gal has only been going for 6 days now. the fish did not have a skimmer the first 5 /6 weeks. i do a 10 gallon water change weekly. my 110 is deep, 4ft long 18 in wide 28 in deep with 2-/1-2 in of live sand n 50 lb aggregate. another thing , i am using the ol fashioned sticks for testing tank pars, maybe this is inacurate. what multi chem test kit thats easy to read would you recommend i get? I have a 4/ t5 fixture 36in mounted inside canopy 2 blues/2 white. and fixin to spend big $$$ on a 48 in T5 aquaticlife six lamp t5 ho with led moons. what do u recommend on this deep tank?? My future plans is some beautiful softies, and nems and a few polops 1 frogspawn / 2 hosting clowns and 2 tangs. is this too much too ask?? sorry just a newbie who is out for experienced aquarist who know. Been there done that the hard way. Thanks for the replies folks

So u had the bi-color for a month before it died.... or u had a few of the damsels for a month, added one more the 5th week and then got the bi-color in the 6th week which your in now??

It is highly recommended that you should QT. I suggest and recommended it (although I personally don't). Its risky, you can introduce pests and diseases into your tank and you cannot treat many of them inside your tank (if doing a reef), so IF you picked ur something nasty you would need one anyways. Also, by QTing you greatly reduce your odds of introducing any of these into your display.

IMO, a qt is no different then a display in the fact that you want to go as big as you can afford and have room for... also depends alot on the types of fish you plan to keep and quantity even IMO (never know something could happen and you need to get all your fish out and to safety quick, like kid over feeding and spiking levels for instance). Im not saying go buy another 110, but if you have the room maybe do a 50 breeder or something instead of a 10-20g that could leave your fish cramped and stressed in a quick move, especially since your planning on doing a couple tangs.

Not having a skimmer in the beginning isn't a huge deal IMO, and I doubt that had anything to do with the bi-colors death.... however possibly (small possibility, but possible) if you didnt clean the skimmer and it was brand new there may have been some kind of chemicals from the building process that may have gotten into the water and played a role. I don't know a ton as far as building w/ acrylic and the possibility of any of the bonding chemicals doing any damage, but I know new silicone has been known to cause issues and be a killer. I had a friend who used pure silicone and still wiped out his tank when he built a new sump for his larger skimmer and didn't rinse it out well after letting it cure for 24 hrs before putting it online!

I think your stocking plans are doable, depending on what tangs your thinking of adding. If you do a Zebrasoma (ie. yellow, purple.... stay away from sailfin's tho) and a Ctenochaetus ( ie. bristletooth, kole) you would probably be ok, although a 6'+ tank would be best and prefered for any tang IMO long term.

Also, a 28" deep tank, you may actually want to consider looking at MH, supplemented by t5's..... If I remember right there was a study and t5's do not penetrate below 20-24" If your 100% sure u only ever want softies and one frogspawn I wouldn't go dropping a ton of $ on a light..... if nothing else and u like your canopy, buy a DIY kit, they are pretty easy to set up if your not afraid of playing with electricity and water.

Thanks Chort55 , your opinion is worth a million bucks to a newbie like me. I am always listening to the experienced in everything. That way i tend to make lesser mistakes and save a few $$ in the process.

No problem Stinger, Im certainly no expert as I've only been in the hobby about 2 years myself and still learn a lot all the time!!

The biggest piece of advice anyone can give you IMO is something I was told when I first started and has proved to be absolutely true.........

Every tank is different, what works for me may not work for you! Find what does work for you and stick to those methods and you will be successful.... which also goes with the whole stability is key thing as well ;)

Should always come here to suggest a fish before buying. A lot of people here lost lots of money in the SW hobby and they can give you really good info in return.

I have only been in the hobby a year and I have learned a lot here by just reading. Stinger, Bi Colors are beautiful fish, but they aren't reef safe. I learned that the hard way. So if you are going to keep coral in your tank, you may want to steer away from getting another one. Happy Reefing!
