I have lost multiple fish in a row doing TTM, am I doing something wrong??? I purchase the fish from a LFS and bring it home. Float bag in the new water for temp acclimation, after 15-30min floating I scoop the fish out and add to the tank. Wait 72hrs and transfer. I have even purchased new QT setups and still lose fish. I have purchased from several different stores with same results. I have lost chromis, foxfaces, regal angels, and maybe one or two more I cant think of right now. Water I use is either water from my AWC station or water from one of the DT. I'm getting to the point of wondering if it's just worth risking to go straight to the DT for better survival rate.

Are you using an ammonia badge?
Are you using a filter of any type or an air stone?
How many fish at a time and in what size tanks?
Are you matching LFS SG?

Sorry you are having so much trouble. I can't speak about TTM, because I treat all fish prophylactically in copper or cp; however, you didn't mention if you are adding tank water to your bag with the fish in it? Part of acclimating a fish is not just letting it adjust to the water temp, which is important, but also to the ph and salinity of the destination tank. Drip method is best, but you should be adding about 1/4 cup of water to the fish bag every 10 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the bag. When the bag is full, dump half and do it all over again. Some fish need more time adjusting to a new ph than others. Here is a good video on aclimation by Title Gardens:

No ammonia badge, but if water looks slightly cloudy I do a WC. I only feed a little at a time and if food is uneaten then I siphon out. I am using an airstone. # of fish / tank size depends on the situation I have 5 and 10g. Larger (typically 4" max) fish typically are done on their own or paired with a small fish. Yes I do match salinity to what the store has.

I did TTM for the first time not long ago, and didn't lose fish...with a tang and wrasse in a 10g. I'm doing another tang and wrasse right now. I make new water each time.

Are you sure your display is disease free? Maybe your DT has ammonia/nitrates/etc

edit: i don't use ammonia badge even though I have one. I usually do pour cap full of bottled bacteria each time.

I proactively dose Prime at the 24 hour mark to eliminate any ammonia risk. However, I am not using any copper medications. My setup is 2x10 gallon tanks filled with 7.5 gallons water and I feel this is the absolute minimum I will ever use. I’ve done 3 small fish (3” total) at a time and one 3” fish at a time. I would expect losses to ammonia being that.

Here’s my process. Right wrong or otherwise it works for me. Two full setups of everything mentioned below.

24 hours prior to adding the first fish I set up a 10 gallon tank with 7.5 gallons RODI. I heat some RODI on the stove to get close to 78 degrees. I add 2# of salt to make 1.020 Sg to match the LFS.

I turn on a small aqueon in tank filter and a small in tank heater. I add a few pvc fitting for hiding and let everything run over night. For bigger fish like tangs I add an air stone.
Once the fish comes home I test the salinity in the bag and drip adjust into the bag if necessary. Usually 0.001 Sg or less. Float to match temp, then in the drink it goes. I feed LRS daily, but very little.

After the fish has been in the tank for 24 hours I dose Prime to bind ammonia. Others keep bacteria seeded filter media in their DT’s sump and add that to control ammonia. I don’t use copper so Prime it is.

After after 48 hours in tank 1, I set up tank 2 in a different room following the outline above.

After 72 hours the fish goes into a 30 minute, 150 ppm h2o2 bath per Humblefish’s Hybrid/TTM method. Then into Tank 2. The Hybrid method is still experimental but so far has worked for me.

Tank 1 and all the gear gets washed in the tub and sprayed with 6:1 bleach solution. I put a fan on it to ensure proper drying within the next 48 hours. After 48 hours of drying it gets set up as outlined above for transfer 3.

A minimum of 12 days total is necessary, not exceeding 72 hours in any given tank. If you go longer than 72 hours, start over.

Hope this helps.
