Lots of empty shells!?! Help please!

Where did you get the hermits?

Also, it's likely you have a pathogen- bacteria or fungus that are attacking your hermits

It's also possible you have a large predetory eunicid worm.

How big are the hermit crabs? How big are the extra shells you bought for them? Hermit crabs will kill each other for their shells especially if there aren't any available that are not taken and that are to small for them. Also are they all the same species of hermit crab (blue, scarlet etc..)

The hermits range from little to medium sized.. We have plenty of shells that range in size... The ones that died all varied in size too... One of our last ones that died looked like he molted, and tried to go to another shell but died before he could find one... He was our biggest one and we had shells to accommodate him...

We bought our hermits from our LFS. Everything in our tank comes from there, we even use the same water they do.. They are all blue leg hermit crabs.

Also they won't switch out to shells of the dead ones... I have a shell cemetery starting now.. We have shells we bought on one side in the back and have slowly started to move the empty ones from our dead crabs to the other corner.. Next to the other ones of our deceased crabs. (that pile was started on its own)

If it makes you feel better, I can't stand hermits in my reef. They kill snails for sport and munch on corals.
