So my tank has been up and running for almost 2 months. I found out my DT actually needed to cycle, and I put in the Dr. Times One and Only and it had no affect on the DT I believe due to all the live rock, at least parameters wise. Coupled that with a raw shrimp, and I suddenly had more things growing in my tank than I could keep track with. These pictures are from this evening. The green things I have been told are sea fans, and they are thriving in my tank. I believe the red stuff may be red slime, the green plant like stuff looks like hair algae, and I may have a bit of bubble algae. I just wanted to get some confimations on what this stuff is and whether or not it needs to be removed, and if so, how to do that. I currently only have some hermit crabs and some snails in the tank. Going to have clownfish hopefully later this month or early next month in the tank.

I believe this is coraline? It started as a very very light purple and is slowly darkening.

Hair algae?

This rock is becoming covered in the red stuff.

Is this coloring normal for coraline? Or is the light green/teal/blue stuff something else?

The red stuff definitely looks like cyano. I prefer erythromycin treatment to get rid of it though others might disagree.

I also see hair algae - which is not desireable and can take over a tank. It looks like you have some bubble algae in the first pic, but hard to tell for sure.

Are you using RODI water? What are you nitrates and phosphates testing at? Are you skimming? Running a sump? Refugium?

Bump I would love to know what the teal stuff is!!! I have been looking for an id on it as well, I get it on my rocks and one of my hermits had it as well, was always worries it was from copper or something. Also the little green things aren't sea fans just a calcerous algae. Some don't like it but I think its kind of cool.

I am currently not using RODI water, but I am setting the unit up this weekend, so fingers crossed. pH is around 8.4, Ammonia is 0, Nitrites are 0, Nitrates are 0. I am currently not testing for phosphates. I plan on having a FOWLR with some inverts tank, do you feel testing for phos. is necessary? I do have a sump, not currently skimming as the skimmer I had refused to work for me and I was advised to wait a bit before getting another one and trying again, also no fuge currently, might consider it down the road.

Phosphates lead to undesirable algae. U should test and keep it low in any tank. Your cyano and algae problems are most likely comming from your tap water and keeping phos down will prevent the algae problems.
