So about 2 months ago, I had an issue where my fish had unfortunately gotten ick. I moved them to a different tank to dose them, and unfortunately lost my royal gramma. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, they were finally able to be moved back to my DT. I've had some algae issues, though assumed it was just the ugly stage. Though not having the fish in the tank, and not feeding them in this tank, I believe caused my nitrate to plummet. Sadly it's getting worse. Once adding my fish back, I noticed my nitrate and phosphate were essentially at 0. I believe my phosphate was 0.02. It appears as though this may have caused what dinos which have just appeared over the last couple of days. My phosphate has come up a pretty decent amount since my last test about 4-5 days ago.

The algae on the side of the tank has been coming back in droves. Take a look at the attached pictures, I scraped it off last Wednesday and this is it as of today. Though what appear to be dinos in the pic of the rock have appeared over the last 24-48 hours.

That said, I know nothing really happens fast in this hobby, but I've really been struggling with algae which has unfortunately taken a few of my coral as well. Prior to my fish getting ick, I felt like I was doing everything right. I've read countless hours of the forums, watched dozens of hours worth of videos. Just a bit discouraging.

I guess this is what I'm looking for out of this post:
  1. I don't have a microscope, but those appear to be dinos as they've really grown out of no where in such an incredibly short amount of time. Thoughts?
  2. My nitrate over the last week or so of having the fish in there hasn't risen much at all. Is it just a waiting game?
  3. I recently added a HOB skimmer, should I turn that off to not filter out extra food to help the nitrogen cycle create more nitrate?
  4. Is my CUC large enough? The guy at my LFS said it should be more than enough, but reading other threads I think that may not be the case.
  5. He also addressed my very shallow sand bed, so I did pick up more sand but didn't want to put it in yet until I checked with others.
  6. Any other tips for someone in my situation?
Thanks in advance, you guys have all been great though apparently there's just something I'm not doing right.

Possibly your placement of aquriam by a window, does your algae grow in the opposite side of window/ your pics show LHS/ furthest away covered in brown, and RHS/ direct hit covered in bubble algae, maybe a different blind/ cover for your window will help reduce algae growth

That was actually something I had thought of not too long ago. I have some black out curtains I'll put up tonight.

Say over the next month I'm going to be the cuc and suck a good amount of the algae out every couple of days clean your glass every day and suck out the detritus. It only takes a little bit of neglect to let the algae come in and it takes a lot more effort to get it out. New tanks will naturally go through ugly phase so manage the problem and it will work its way out.
