There is a word... silent as a fish.
But last couple of weeks I heard in my tank seldom some clicks (low frequency noise).
I was a bit afraid to not have a mantis, but the tank was started with sterile rocks. Not the usual sound of snails cleaning their shells on glass either.
In the end I found out that my Banggai Cardinalfish do this sound anytime another fish come too close by his hoovering place. Some things came under his mouth when doing this sound.
hahah... Are there any other noisy fishes to be aware of???

This is my loud guy :)

Clownfish will often click at fish, and even aquarists that get too close. There is a whole group of fish that are called grunts, that make noise when threatened.

Thanks for clarification...
I had clowns for years but never heard anything... Maybe my new tank is too silent :)

Some fish can be very noisy - just not usually the ones we keep.

Where I live, there's a fish called the Oyster Toadfish. The male's call can reach 110 decibels - not too far from a subway train. (Toadfish can make entertaining tank residents, and some come in delightful color combinations - but they are predatory, and have large mouths . . . )

Thanks Bruce... I never heard about such fishes. I dont think you can relax and enjoy in silence a tank with such fishes :)
I have 2 small parrots who dont have 100 db for sure but can be annoying sometimes.

My emperor angel grunts really loudly. I can hear him upstairs in my house and my tank is in the basement. He only does it when other fish are annoying him. It's usually at my Niger Trigger around bed time when they are jockeying for the best sleeping spot.
