Is there anyway to quiet an overflow box? It sounds like I have a small waterfall in my living room?

What type of over flow box do you got? Is it coming from the sump or from the box itself?

If the noise is from the sump try lowering to output below the water line.

If it is the overflow itself what type of noise is it exactly is it a gurgle or waterfall. If water fall where is it coming from the tube going down to the sump or from the water going into the box?

If its from water going into the box try some filter media just below where the water enters the box to break the crashing of the water (if that makes sense).

If its from the tube to the sump (generally a gurgling sound) try looking into a durso

this should fix most problems with noise from an overflow

Sounds like a waterfall, it's definitely the tubes to the sump, but the return is keeping up

Try the durso it should help. Is the tank drilled? If so you can also throttle back the pump some to quite it down a bit and between the 2 it should be pretty quite.

Can you extend the drain about and inch or two below the sump water level?

On my tank, I made a PVC pipe that is submerged just below the water surface, then goes over the edge of the tank, then through a ball valve, then into the sump. I start the siphon by just putting a small tube into the PVC and sucking a small bit of air. I chose small enough of pipes that it can even suck in a lot of air and it won't break the siphon. The ball valve can be used to adjust the flow, and I go for letting just a small amount of water go through the overflow. I liked this solution because it was stupid cheap, barely visible, didn't require modifications to the tank, and still leaves the main overflow completely open. My tank was so loud before, but after doing this (and removing the protein skimmer, which might end up being a bad idea), it's so quiet that I can hear the rasping of my turbo snails! [emoji14]

durso is loud. Standard oveflows are just loud. This is why I hate "reef ready" tanks. It just means it's ready for an overflow, not that it's ready to be a quiet and redundant system.

Research the beananimal drain. SILENT. redundant.

Thanks for the info. I know what I will be doing this weekend. I will let you know how it works. I just set up a 40 breeder as a frag tank with a HOB overflow that I can't quite down.
