Has anyone else noticed that their tiger pistol shrimp is really loud. Mine pops a lot and it is very annoying and distracting. It’s not always loud but sometimes it’s super loud. He woke me up snapping three times one night. My tank is in my bedroom, and his popping has even woken up my sister across the hall. Does anyone else have this problem with their pistol shrimp?

Yeah, Ive had the tiger shrimp before.
Snapped every night and turned into a killer when it got bigger. Only did it when felt threatened or wanted to stun something for food.
Took out two of my fish. Had it paired with a yellow goby.

PISTOL shrimp .....

Did you buy a dog and not expect it to bark every once and a while?

Just teasing :p, but.....yeah

It killed fish!! I’ve never heard of them doing that before. That must have been a huge pistol.

Of course I knew it would snap, I had heard that it wasn’t that loud though. I guess that’s what I get for sticking a tank in my bedroom:P

Yeah I saw it stun my tang and it took it to its lair faster than I could do anything about it.
Also lost a fire fish to it.
Grew to 2.5” in a years time

It got a tang?! ;Wideyed What size was the tang?

I have one or two in my tank and I hear them snap all day long. Busy little things. Only seem them maybe once a year. They were hitchhikers in my LR.

I have a pair of candy pistol shrimp and they used to pop all night (would hear them several times an hour, all hours of the night). They are pistol shrimp, but you get used to it lol. They stopped after I cut back feeding, I suspect they were snapping at the bristle worms that would get in their tunnel. It’s just part of the charm:D

tigers tend to be bigger and meaner though

Have heard that some pistols will takeout livestock (have read that bullseye pistols sometimes do but no experience)

I have an Alpheus randalli, he is a model citizen. Except for once. Had him about 3 months. Was watching the tank one evening while he was doing his thing. Moving sand making channels.

A red leg hermit happened to be down in the sand, crossed in front of the shrimps burrow. Like lightning that shrimp gave him a big pop, turned the hermit over, and dragged him into the burrow. Pop pop pop pop. Thought the hermit was a goner. About 30 seconds later that crab shot out of the burrow and scurried up the rock.

Haven't seen it happen since. Not sure what the deal was.

I assumed mine was probably snapping at amphipods, but bristle worms are a good guess too. I had also heard that tigers were meaner and I wanted candy stripe, but tigers were all that my lfs has.
