I’m getting mixed answers depending on who I ask. My LFS has live rock in a tub with water and pump or filter(not sure) no fish. Question is do I still have to be concerned about ich being in the rock? Or once the cycles done I’m good to add fish?

Hmm so this depends on a few things.

Is this live rock from the ocean or dry rock made live rock by seeding it and letting it mature over a period of time?

The reason I ask is, live rock has been known to have fish survive hidden in the rockwork. Many people have scored some awesome blennies and gobies among other life. So if it is from the ocean originally, there may be something hiding in there. If so, 76 days fishless will guarantee no issues.

Otherwise, if you can guarantee no fish have seen this system and no rock was added from a system with fish within 76 days, you are good to go.

I tend to consider how much of a pain it would be to catch all my fish to treat them if ich were to get in my system. Then I tend to quarantine rather than risk it.

Hope this helps.

Depends on how long the last rock entered the system. Most people here recommend 76 days of quarantine to prevent or limit the possibility of Ick. I use often use U.V. or ozone to prevent higher levels of water born parasites...but that is just me. Many on here recommend both quarantine for fish and rock.

In my experience most LFS have bacteria rock that is cycled with bacteria and therefore live. However I know of one near me in CT who actually has true live rock full of biodiversity that is air freighted from overseas. Best thing to do is ask them.

Also, generally the bacteria rock is browner and the true live rock has diverse colors. I will note further there is one LFS by me that will take rock in from people’s tanks and mix it into their vats. This rock was likely exposed to fish.

Thanks, the owner tells me it’s good of course. Others have warned me I just wasn’t sure which way to go

Are you going to qt every single thing you add to your tank? Corals and inverts? I think ich always finds a way in, you just have to control it.

I wouldnt stress, it would be clean after the cycle anyways.

i really dont trust any old live rock if you dont want any hidden creatures. i am just getting ready to put water in my tank and after a ton of research i have picked "REEL REEF ROCK"...check it out and see what you think

Live rock all the way. Best tanks I ever had used very fresh rock covered in life forms. We always cycled the rock to handle the die off from shipping. Used to set up tanks in a day for trade shows with little or no problem.
